the term is widely used to describe the fact that games come preinstalled, nothing more

Likely licensing issues with car manufacturers. The licenses likely expired a long time ago.

Also, no Tony Hawk?? Shame, shame. Some of the titles Sony has left off were PSX system sellers.

I've decided I'm not going to get one after watching some early YT reviews. Seems like Sony put in very little effort into this and are simply looking to cash in on the craze - not that I was really expecting otherwise.

I'm not even that upset about the library and I've already mentioned up-thread I'm really disappointed in there not being a DualShock but the part that gets me is there not being any kind of graphics options.

Even the S/NES Minis came with simple scanlines, and you could argue they don't really need them given how popular sprite-based pixel art has become. But one could make an objective argument that some kind of CRT emulation is mandatory for PS1 games. Between the dithering effects and the use of pre-rendered backgrounds and UI elements, the games were specifically designed to be played on CRTs.

I gave Sony far too much credit, i assumed they would at least use their own ps1 emulation from the PS3 and this would be a workable cash grab, but no, they actually used a free open source emulator and it seems put in zero effort, nice one Sony.

    For the players. lol

Yeah. The PS3 emulator wasn't that great either and was a stop-gap since they took the MIPS chips out of the slim models. It focused on compatibility over accuracy and was tweaked specifically for the PS3 hardware. So it was never really a viable option. Even then, there were still some significant holes in the compatibility issues and the accuracy was shit at times. Frankly, the PS3 emulation was mediocre at best, even for the time and is vastly inferior to the best options of today.

That's not to say PCSX is much better, but it runs on cheap (ARM) hardware - the one the PSX Classic uses is the one specifically designed for the Raspberry Pi.

I suppose it could be argued they could have built something based on the guts of the PSP since running PSX games was a sort of emulation/real hardware "hybrid" of sorts. But that would have increased production costs considerably and not at all worth it - especially given the age of the technology. And while I think the Vita uses the same (or very similar) technology, I can't say for sure since I don't know much about it.

Most of the games I'd be interested in revisiting PSX for are bigger obscurities than these.

Vita is pretty much perfect, just (officially) limited to those on the psn store. There was also the vita tv, but it discontinued so fast they are expensive now (especially in the EU)

Both are significantly better than the classic, and the treatment of the Vita by Sony and the gaming press has been abysmal.

I have one ;). I meant for anyone who wanted to get this and didn't have a Vita or a PS3.

Definitely. And the pricing of the memory cards for it didn't help either.
