Is flying in atmosphere the same as flying in space?Luke has had some piloting experience. In "A New Hope" he mentioned flying the T-16 skyhopper before. Biggs mentioned it as well.
Well, this is Star Wars.
Both served the story just fine and progressed the characters. I might not like them but I would hesitate to describe them as stupid or unnecessary.
The Incom T-16 has basically the same controls as the Incom T-65 X-wing. That was almost exactly why the Alliance was able to get pilots for their X-wing squadrons, was because so many people had experiance with the T-16 and similar craft on their own homeworlds before hooking up with the Rebel Alliance.
And given what the Empire does to its fighter corps, it doesn't seem like there needs to be a lot of experience to fly these things. Its more a matter of if you are good enough to survive in combat. And that's really hard in a TIE Fighter if the enemy isn't scared of you at the start. X-wings at least have shields.

Han's was necessary by the real world fact that Harrison Ford no longer wanted to be part of the franchise.
A fact rendered moot when you realize that Ford wasn't part of the franchise for the 32 years that separated his last two performances as Solo. You know, those 32 years he spent having the career he could not have had if it hadn't been for Solo in the first place. It's not like he was typecast or anything.
No, nobody will ever convince me that Han and Luke's deaths were a good thing. I can accept them, but I don't have to like them.
People by and large wanted Han Solo in any continuation of the original Star Wars trilogy. Having him die at his son's hand after his relationship with Leia broke apart seemed fitting.

Until about a week ago, story-wise, Finn was so dehumanized by the FO he hadn't even given himself a name. In other words, regardless of how old he appears, emotionally speaking, he's probably a severely traumatized adolescent at best. So... I'm thinking he's probably not quite ready for any kind of sexual relationship with an adult. He's basically 7 of 9 a week after her de-Borgification.I also want her and Finn to hook up. Both the writer for ESB,RoTJ, and TFA,and Ford wanted to kill Han off back in the OT films, thinking his arc was over. Lucas didn't agree because he wanted to keep the pairing with Liea to continue to the next generation of Skywalkers.

Quaid's character was an ex-Air Force/Navy pilot who had obvious problems (and also believed that aliens had abducted him) which is why he was able to do what he did.
And Rey mentions piloting as well.
But, in the face of arguments against Rey, I have to point out that Luke sliding in to a military squadron and engaging in dogfighting is not quite the same as just flying. So, it's a stretch
Nope. No hook ups in the series...please! I don't Rey and Finn, or Finn and Rose, or Finn and Poe, or BB-8 and evil BB 8, Rey and Kylo, or Chewie and the Resistance doctor. Just no more!
IMHO, I don't think (looking at how Luke ended up, as well as Ashoka Tano) that Rey will be hooking up with anybody (and Finn already has Rose Tico.) If she gets a hook-up, it'll probably be with Poe.

Star Wars movies work best when they avoid sexuality. The limited will they or won't they level of heat with Han and Leia is best, but when they go for more you get stilted faux Romeo and Juliet with Anakin and Padme.
I don't expect the powers that be to realize this, however. The skype calling nonsense already went too far in fanning the flames of shipper fetishists.
