    Silver is expensive.

    Silver plated is cheap.

    Tin plated is cheaper.

Tin plated is not as rare as silver or gold plated. Even the meaning of 'tinny' is thin and metallic of sound.

Yeah. Putting plating on something gives the appearance that the whole item is made out of the same metal, when in fact a cheaper, inferior metal is underneath the plating. Something that's not really as significant as it appears. A phony, sham, powerless person.

I'm guessing the joke is that tin is so cheap that no one would plate with it...

British naval vessels used to be copper-bottomed to resist fouling by Teredo worms, barnacles and similar sealife.

The phrase "copper-bottomed" has come mean dependable or trustworthy. However, copper sheeting was reliable only if copper, not iron, nails were used to secure it because galvanic action rapidly rusted the iron away like a sacrifial anode. (Iron and untreated steel have a more negative electrochemical potential than copper.) I've never heard the phrase "copper-fastened" used as an idiom for reliability and security though. It seems to have died out long ago.

The poor B9 Lost In Space Robot was often assailed by Dr. Smith with derogatory name calling. "Tin plated" was periodically a prefix to other insults he'd say to it.

Missed opportunity for great dialog for Oppenheimer in "The Neutral Zone"... :p

"No money, no Wall Street Journal, no financial portfolio of mine... This is what happens when you let the Democrats win!

And, worst of all, no TV to take my mind off of it. To top it all off, the replicator can't even make a polo shirt with an alligator on it!"

Dialogue from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier...

Uhura: Mr. Scott apologies for having to send the shuttle crafts! The transporters are non-operational.

Kirk: Why didn't you beep my commmunicator?

Uhura: You forget to take it with you.

Kirk (sarcastic): Wonder why I did that?

I appreciate this exchange more and more with every passing year. I intentionally didn't check my cell phone once today.

I just now discovered that Sonya Gomez was played by the same actress who played the three breasted prostitute in Total Recall. Mind=blown.

Hats off to the TNG wardrobe guys; I have no idea how they managed to hide her third boob so well.

There was a very clever edit incorporating scenes from both but it looks to have vanished from Youtube.

I looked really smart in the room, when I got it lol. The guy who'd been running away with the game blew a big chunk of cash & lost, by answering Vulcans :guffaw:The other two got it right :techman:

Dude missed a golden opportunity for some Trek-splaining. He should have led with a "Well, actually the Romulans are an offshoot of the Vulcanoid race" comment followed by a lengthy elucidation of the history of the Rihannsu people as chronicled in the works of Diane Duane.

    I was wondering...
Now that a Picard series has been announced and a start date (of sorts) when is there going to be a thread for it?

Apologies if this has already been asked...

Take a look into the forum 'Future of Trek'. Threads about the Picard series can be found there.

Out shopping (horrible an idea as that’s turning out to be) and saw an espresso cup that said “Bean Me Up!”

Of course the works of Diane Duane are not canon in the movies and TV shows and in my opinion are inconsistent with that canon.

Star Trek was cancelled in 1969. But here it is, still here in 2019.
