So just a quick question. Say I have a thing I wrote that I wanted to make an announcement and explain. Would this be a good place for it? Because I have a series I have been working on and am getting to a stage where I want to post it (I am not posting the thing on this thread but one specifically for it) but wanted to gauge everyone's interest in it before I did so.

If it's Trek related, it might be more at home in the Fan Fiction forum.

So is the prime timeline being destroyed with the return of Picard? Only as much as Kelvin's might, which means neither ultimately could be.

17:08 onward claims it all, summarizing what is opined at 18:09.

I think the jumble with the conditions to make the movies and shows, 25% difference, goofy costume designs, etc, is more trying to make something new within a near-impossible set of circumstances. Picard's situation might be good, and if nothing else there's no way that the new show could be worse than the season of TNG you dislike the most. (for which most people loathe 1, but season 1 still had more sense of adventure than the addled soap opera it became in its latter years. And to be fair, TNG 1 had no underlying or unifying theme. The Picard Show has a definitive theme - an aftermath and a possible way to pave for a new future.)

The Picard series needs to be a passing of the torch for the truck loads of Star Trek series being churned out for the rest of its existence by CBS. It has to be steered in a fashion to merge the goofy compromise JJ Abrams did in Star Trek. The reality is TOS sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the sh*t they're doing now, and there has to be some form of narrative to purge it; Disco has already started the process by redesigning the Enterprise and inputting some of the worst costume designs which does justice to their new show. At some point CBS has to look forward to the future of their property and the make overs are necessary to fit their manufactured way of making multiple TV series which are more of the same, JAG--NCIS etc, CSI--CSI NY, LA, MIA etc, CBS Star Trek has to cater to their level of audience members, and hopefully new audience members who don't care about TOS or TNG but something that is more in the vein of Star Wars.

Captain Pike has a nice console television in his cabin. He and Tom Paris are of one mind. I wonder what he watches?

His communicator looks like prison issue--you can see through it!

So he's not used to having a woman on the bridge? I guess Burnham doesn't count because her name is Michael...

A lot of old men with hairy chests and wardrobe malfunctions. Looks like Khan borrowed their gear to go after Kirk.

John Hoyt's doctor is powerfully eloquent.

Vina gives the first facepalm in Trek history!

I am always fascinated by this story's style and unfolding.

I have a couple of questions, and I'm hoping this is the right thread for them.

    1. How old do you have to be to start at Starfleet, do you have to be from a certain age or is there no age requirement.

    2. I know on TNG at least, and I think possibly Voyager, there were families on board but do any other ships have families or allow them on board. Say if a Captain had a child, old enough to look after themselves say early teens, but there's no other living family would they be able to stay with. Could they theoretically bring that child with them for the duration of their command on that ship or would that be frowned upon/not allowed.

I've got some possible ideas brewing for a ST fic, and had some questions. I've probably got more to be honest. If this is the wrong place no worries.

I was going to mention DS9 and Sisko as well, but I can't edit my posts at the moment.

Spock followed Nero's ship into the wormhole. Unless there was a quantum field around the redmatter event creating a zero-point in quantum stability, then the present day universe should have been destroyed as the first ship went into the past, and the second ship could have never followed the first, because it didn't exist any more.

Spock and Kirk were prophylactically protected from the changes to the universe by the Guardian, because they were close to the guardian being smothered by the guardians temporal fields.

In First Contact Picard was protected from the Borg Sphere changing the past by the temporal wake, and was able to follow it into the past despite that it should not exist in a present day where the Borg had ruled Earth fro 200 years.

Neutrino build upon the defiant hull protected the Defiant when Sisko killed Gabriel Bell and stopped Earth from going commie, and present day changed "around" them.

Time can be jammed like radar can be jammed.

    1. Wesley was allowed to apply at 14. I don't think anyone mentioned that as being a minimum age, though. In fact, I would suspect they would probably just trust that the entrance exam is clearly too difficult for extremely young people, since any sort of hard age limit would be problematic to enforce across different species (Imagine telling an Ocampa they can't join until 14...).

    2. Having kids on board seems perfectly normal in the 24th century, though with as little info as we have, it may be the case that extraordinarily small ships or ships on certain types of missions don't allow families. And, just for the record, that's specifically the 24th century. In the 23rd century, they didn't do that sort of thing at all as far as I can recall.

    1. I completely forgot about Wesley (shame on me) but I wasn't sure if there was a minimum age that people joined. I'm probably going to go with 18/19 for this fic I'm working on.

    2. I know so far I've seen no families or even mention of them on Discovery and on Enterprise or in the reboot films. So I'm guessing your right.

Ideally, entrance eligibility for members of a race would be based upon consultation with educational and medical experts from that planet to determine baselines and such - keep in mind that given the wide range of possible postings and duties, there's a place for almost anyone of any physical ability. In the case of a lone/first member of a species to apply, they might have to live up to standards set by a similar race.

H&I was just showing "Charlie X"...you'd think TOS-R would have gotten rid of Charlie's extra "WHEN I CAME ABOARD!"

I'm reminded of Icheb's situation on Voyager. There aren't any Brunali to consult with, and I don't remember any references to similar Federation species. Icheb was described as an "immature drone" which implies that he was at best a teenager, by both his species' standards and by human standards. I'm guessing he would have been close to Wesley's age when he first took the entrance exam (maybe a year older).

do you think that a tribble could ever become the captain of a starship??

i know this sounds completely absurd, but please hear me out!

what if someone genetically modified a tribble so it would become sentient, and as that tribble bred over several generations, they would get smarter and smarter to the point where they are capable of making sound and rational decisions? hell, maybe they could even learn to talk! and if this happened, what if one of them decided that they wanted to become a starfleet officer?
