News Next Arrowverse Crossover to Include Batwoman

Those are things that can be influenced by life and situations, it wouldn’t change your sexuality. That’s set at birth. If the two are genetically identical, then both would be gay.

I take it that's what alternate Alex's stiffening up / apprehension meant when she was talking about the couple of dates she had with some co-worker (that did not work out)..

Just to be clear: I don't mean that in a "something happened to Bruce and Clark would have saved him" kind of way, but more of a "Clark has a positive influence on Bruce" type of thing. Indeed, much like we see here with Oliver & Barry.

Yeah, I figured that was what you meant, and that's what I liked about it. I love stories about the power of friendship, which is part of what makes these Oliver-Barry teamups so much fun.

Well it was a blue glowy pointy stick, so clearly something is going on there.

Okay, I wasn't sure if I'd seen a glow on the arrowhead or not. Still, it's odd to have it be the climax of the episode but leave it unexplained. Setting up future stories is all well and good, but it shouldn't come at the expense of the current story's coherence.

Why wouldn’t she be gay? You’re born that way, the fact that she’s an exact double of her Alex would imply she has the same genetics. So she would be gay too. It’s not like it has anything to do with how you’re raised.

Current thinking is that sexuality isn't determined by genetics per se, but by epigenetic and developmental factors such as the hormonal balance in the womb during brain development. So it would be possible for alternate-timeline copies of the same person to have different sexualities, as we've seen in the Arrowverse with Captain Cold vs. Citizen Cold (and with John Trujillo and Black Condor in Freedom Fighters: The Ray, though that series doesn't really fit into Arrowverse canon). Although of course we have also seen instances where doppelgangers had the same sexuality; e.g. Earth-1 and Earth-X Sara Lance are/were both bisexual.

See also Orphan Black, where the various "genetic identicals" (clones) of Project Leda covered the gamut of sexualities from hetero to bi to lesbian to trans male.

Speaking of Supermen... it probably won't ever ever happen, but I'd be cool to have Tom Welling fill the role of the older Earth-2 "Golden Age" Superman from the original Crisis comic.

Welling is only 41, way too young to fill that role. How about Kyle Maclachlan? He did a nifty job as a Silver Age-style Superman in Justice League: The New Frontier.

Yep, this too (in addition to the "wife and kids" reaction I mentioned above). That was part of what got to her in what Kara was saying -- invoking an Alex able to be true to herself in every way.

Except that IS a problem, it IS emasculating, and it IS inconsistent with Superman outside of this one small show. You may not like it, but it doesn't make it any less true.

Do tell, where in the comics is Superman show to be stronger than Supergirl or feel threatened by her?

So your definition of masculine is the exact opposite of what masculine is. Being a man does not require bending the knee and being submissive. In fact, that's exactly what emasculating is.

emasculateverb [ T ]
UK /ɪˈmæs.kjə.leɪt/ US /ɪˈmæs.kjə.leɪt/
reduce the effectiveness of something:

They were accused of trying to emasculate the report's recommendations.
feel less male by taking away his power andconfidence:

A lot of men would feel emasculated if they stayed at home while their wives went out to work.

So which of these applies? Is Superman being made less effective by acknowledging Kara's abilities? I ask because he doesn't seem to be feeling less male.

It's only a weak man who feels threatened by acknowledging a woman is stronger, Clark's fine with it and has been in the comics for a long time. This seems to be more about your feelings than the characters'.

So are we drawing up wishlists for multiversal guest-stars in COIE?
Brandon Routh suiting up as the Superman from Earth-006?
or
Tom Welling as the Earth-Smallville Superman sporting t- shirt and jeans of the New 52 Superman?
David Mazouz as the Earth-Gotham Bruce Wayne
JWS as Barry-90, Jay Garrick and Henry Allen (Comics COIE included charcters from the past and future)

To go forward with COIE we really need to see more Earths next season. A lot more. Since we are not killing off any main characters we need to introduce some Earths that can be erased by antimatter. We also need a lot more characters around that can be killed as needed. I really need Pariah and Lady Quark to appear.

They should bring back old tv shows as one-offs as part of the event like Lois and Clark, Wonder Woman and Smallville.
Hell, bring back JLU. :)

I know it will never happen but maybe put a nod to the Titans universe in it as well. Berlanti has his fingers in that as well.

@Kirk Prime I think you will enjoy this video. John Campea reviewed the CW crossover and while he loved the crossover in general, he goes on an epic rant about what the crossover does to Superman that I think you will enjoy.

I know it wasn't to me - but I agree with everything this guy said regarding this show's writers and the character of Superman. Again, I find it interesting that some people equate comments like this with guys like me feeling "threatened" by powerful depictions of women/female characters; and that was not my point, or how I feel about strong female characters.

Everything with Superman leaving made sense and worked with the situation (Lois is pregnant, and needs to go to Argo City.) They really didn't need to effectively dump on the character that was pretty much the genesis of the classic superhero genre and superhero characters.

I admit that line Kara said about being too scared being a girl was stupid and unnecessary. Why is she making it about gender?
You know the Supergirl writers wrote this one.

I still find the idea that it's "dumping on" him in any way to be totally bizarre. If someone else said that Superman was weak, that would be dumping on him, sure. But if Superman himself says "you're stronger than I am," if he's humble and selfless and praises others instead of himself, that is something to admire about Superman. It's portraying him in a positive light, not a negative one, because it shows how kind and giving he is, how dedicated he is to building others up instead of feeding his own ego.

Honestly, it's just basic, everyday courtesy and civility to praise others' worth above your own. That's why we say "The pleasure is all mine" when we meet someone -- it's a way of praising their worth while downplaying your own, of saying they're more of a pleasure to know than you are. Only a jerk would say "I'm better than you" to someone's face, so of course Superman isn't going to do that. He was raised to be polite and kind to other people, so he will praise them at his own expense rather than the reverse. It doesn't mean he really is weak; it just means he's selfless and respectful of others.

I was thinking Gerard Christopher (Superboy) myself.
I was going to say the same. That series is largely forgotten and none of the actors have ever appeared in these type of legacy roles. He should have played Jor-El on Smallville.

Anyone who was a fan of him should watch the video at this link. His real name is Gerard Dinome. He is married to a very respected doctor - Maggie Dinome MD. On her Facebook page there is a video of them and their two daughters in a profile for an award she won. Watch to the end, it is the closest he has come to reprising the role https://m.facebook.com/pg/MaggieDiNomeMD/videos/?ref=page_internal&mt_nav=0

That was pretty obvious, especially to any queer viewer. It’s something that every closeted person has done at some point or another.

Uh, that was Christopher's point. Sexuality isn't genetic per se.

But all of that real-life science and mathematics basically go out the window when alternate universes are depicted in most fiction. From a realistic perspective, encountering an alternate version of someone you know well, and with the same personality, when there are infinite universes' worth of 7 billion humans in 2018 doesn't make sense because that would be like winning the lottery a thousand times on the same day.

Principally, Alex-1 is lesbian and palatable to persuasion from Alex-38's sister because the writers wrote her that way per the tropes of such fiction.
