News Next Arrowverse Crossover to Include Batwoman

Nice writeup on the crossover in USA TODAY this morning.

Here it is:

Some nice new pictures, including one of Clark and Kara at STAR Labs. I guess that all but confirms that, as usual, the Super contingent is coming to Earth-One. Another nail in the coffin of my hopes that Batwoman would be an Earth-38 series. Anyway, Batwoman's costume looks really good.

Unlike the previous multi-episode affairs, “Elseworlds" affects the characters of each show going forward, and Benoist reveals it will carry into the 2019 crossover. Amell says it’s leading somewhere, “and if you're a big comic-book fan, you'll be able to at least theorize about where that could be.”

Uh-oh. Crisis on Infinite Earths next year?

Although USA Today is wrong to say the previous crossovers had no lasting impact. They didn't have much effect on Supergirl, but Invasion! and Crisis on Earth-X both had significant impacts on at least one or two of the other shows -- especially Crisis, which featured two weddings and a funeral.

I wonder if Batwoman is picked up as a regular series if they'll film it in Chicago to, or go to Vancouver with the other shows?

The original newspaper from the future put the Crisis in 2024. However, Barry became the Flash 5 years early due to Thawne's manipulations. 2019 puts the Crisis 5 years early. Coincidence?

I'm still wondering if they actually shot first unit in Chicago with the cast, or just sent a crew there to shoot establishing shots of the skyline and background plates for matte shots. These days it's easy to digitally combine shots of the cast on a Vancouver sidewalk with background scenes shot elsewhere in the world.

Hmm...

If they do, in fact, do COIE, I hope they end it with the multiverse being preserved rather than collapsed. Supergirl's alien-centric worldbuilding gives it a distinct character and story thrust of its own, and a lot would be lost if the worlds were homogenized into one. And The Flash and the crossovers have demonstrated that there's abundant story potential in parallel worlds. Besides, DC Comics didn't take that long to realize that wiping out the multiverse had been a bad idea, and they eventually brought it back.

And sneak peak #2: Oliver wakes up as Barry Allen.

I like how they had the sound effect for the salmon ladder, but didn't actually make Grant Gustin do it.

I like how their confident that their shows will all be renewed next year (and presumably Batwoman picked up). You know, IF the 2019 crossover is COIE, that would be the perfect time to have Black Lightning crossover with the Arrowverse (assuming that gets another season).

They're all doing okay by CW standards, and they have a deal with Netflix so it's a fairly safe bet as these things go.

And Batwoman better be picked up, or else... :klingon:

The CW is not known for being quick on the cancellation trigger. Heck, Supernatural is in, like, its 3,051st season by now, and it was only supposed to run 5 years.

Also... The CW currently has 15 hourlong dramas on the air, and Berlanti Productions makes 7 of them -- just under half. (That's the 5 DC shows, Riverdale, and the football drama All American.) So I figure at this point, The CW pretty much lets Berlanti Productions do whatever they want.

Okay, according to a new Amell interview, the cast actually did shoot in Chicago:

The idea that we get to go to Gotham City is really exciting, and we got to do something that I’ve never done. I’ve never shot the show anywhere but Vancouver, so we go to Chicago and do all that felt amazing.

Also, Amell says he "got to shoot on sets both in Gotham City and Star City and Central City and Earth-38...," which seems like further confirmation that Gotham isn't on Earth-38.

Heck, the CW gave CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND four seasons though even its basement-level ratings NEVER matched its critical acclaim.

Good for them, btw.

It starts tonight! Yay! :)

Do we do a grading and discussion thread, or do we keep using this one? Can't remember how it was last year?
