Legendary's Godzilla 2 & beyond - News & Rumors

I love their designs for Rodan and King Ghidorah, but I don't like that Mothra. Maybe she'll look better in action.

 

Yeah, a Mothra with a realistic insect body is a change from the fuzzy Mothra we know and love.

 

At first I thought it was supposed to be some new version of Battra. Then I realized they were going for a more insectoid Mothra.

 

Those designs look pretty faithful. Mothra not so much but I think old school fans must be happy.

 

I saw those last night via the "Omni Viewer" on YouTube. Assuming these figures will closely match the final onscreen designs (which SH Monster Arts is noted for), I'm pleasantly surprised how "traditional" the element are for Rodan and King Ghidorah. Omni noted how the new Monster-verse Rodan" leans how to his 50s design with the spade shaped tail and "suggestion" (because the photos don't clearly reveal the underside) of belly spikes. Ghidorah's forward leaning posture makes Omni Viewer wonder if the Kaiju will occasionally walk on all fours, like a bat. Well, the figure reveals an upper limb structure supporting the membranes much like a bat's, so who knows.

The biggest change is Mothra, particularly the head, body and limbs. The wings and their coloration seem very similar to the Toho designs, which the first thing a "regular" audience will notice. Omni described the head, body and legs as almost "wasp"-like with forelimbs a bit like a praying mantis. Some will say this is sacrilege, but I like this design. Now she is both beautiful (because of the colorful wings) and terrifying. I'd think even Ghidorah would give pause before attacking her. Omni Viewer appreciated the changes too and stated his opinions more eloquently than I could.

Godzilla himself is still closely resembles his 2014 design with a couple of subtle tweaks hearkening to the Toho concepts. You'll see the dorsal fins no longer look like a craggy, Bonstellian mountain range. Instead, they have the almost maple leaf-like structure the Showa and Heisei era suits had. Yay! The toe claws are more longer, more like talons. The feet themselves are still elephantine, but the "talons" counterbalance that. Someone also noticed the tail seems a bit more rounded at the tip, less sharp than the 2014 design. Personally, I like they've hit almost the near perfect balance between Legendary's own concept with subtle flourishes of iconic Toho details.

In short, if these toys truly reflect the designs we'll see in the movie, then I'm a very happy camper!

 

I couldn't figure out what this Mothra reminded of, but a wasp definitely sounds right.
I can see making her a bit more intimidating for these movies, but Mothra is my favorite Kaiju, so I am a bit disappointed they went so far off from the traditional design.
I'm not about to boycott the movie or start yelling and throwing a fit, I'm just disappointed is all. Unlike a lot of people you come across on the internet, I'm actually able to keep an open mind about this kind of stuff. For all I know, she could end up being the best part of the movie.

 

That Mothra is pathetic. I've seen several movies with the old one, and I never would have guessed that was Mothra if you didn't tell me. But, Godzilla and Ghidorah look great, so I guess 2 out of 3 good designs is tolerable, even though I probably care more about Mothra then I do Ghidorah if it comes down to it.

 

Mothra looks bad. Hopefully it looks a lot better in the movie.

 

The shot of Mothra's wings in the trailer looked glorious.

 

I hear what you're all saying about the new Mothra, but in keeping with the updated looks of the new movies, the old plush toy design of "classic" Mothra would look pretty foolish by comparison, IMHO.

 

I can see what you're saying, but I would think there would be a way to give her more of an edge while still keeping more familiar elements than this version has.

 

Well, keep in mind that this is just a toy. The film version of Mothra could have a fuzzier texture than a plastic toy can adequately capture.

 

CBR reports (based on a Tweet by Mike Dougherty) that there's gonna be a new trailer on Sunday to coincide with the Brazil Comic Con.

 

I like the new Mothra, the head design gives her a regal appearance. She is the Queen of the Monsters after all.

 

I like the almost all wing design.

It was nice to get more of a look at Rodan, Ghidorah, and Mothra.
My favorite part:
"You want to make Godzilla our pet?"
"No, we will be his".
It sounds like Godzilla might be the good guy this time.

 

Forget Godzilla vs Kong, I want Godzilla vs Mrs Frederick.
