Finally Watching Discovery - Was I Supoosed to Hate This?

DSC actually sucks because the bridges aren't that big. They should at least make them as big as the bridge in BSG:TOS. At least that would elevate them above mediocrity.

Bigger bridges or I riot.

Also I haven’t been to impressed by some of the practical effects, like when Sarek was injured in his shuttle, on his hand you could see “dried blood”, but really it was clear that it was water-based green paint, like the type kids use to fingerpaint and when L’Rell was eating the piece of meat from the dead Klingon, you could tell that it was a chicken drumstick.

But would that be a bridge too far? :)

Practical effects aren't always easy to do. I mean, of course it's paint/dye of some kind, and I sincerely hope Mary Chieffo didn't engage in cannibalism, they're scenes that are supposed to pass quickly and give the illusion of realism as they move on to the primary set pieces. One of my favorite TOS episodes, "Patterns of Force," has the scene where Spock and Kirk are trapped in the jail, and they've been "whipped." The marks are clearly painted on, but it doesn't take away from the story because we know (or we hope) no one horse whipped Bill Shatner or Leonard Nimoy for some sense of verisimilitude.

To make a further point, one of my favorite movies, "Star Trek (2009)" has the scene where young Spock was bullied for being half human, and as he sits on a bench talking to Sarek, his lip is bleeding. It is the correct green blood for Vulcans, but his lips are clearly red. It might take away from your enjoyment if you dwell on it, but moments like that pass swiftly enough to be ignored in the grand scheme of the movie or TV series.

What I was getting at was that we have seen Vulcan’s bleeding before and they still managed to make it look like green blood, even if they were using paint. But this time, Sarek was suppose to be injured and bleeding and the “blood” on his hands could very easily be seen as paint. It didn’t have the sheen that fresh blood should have or the darkness of dried blood.

And again with the eating, we’ve seen Klingons eating before, but the food didn’t look like everyday food. And we sure didn’t see someone grab what was clearly a chicken drumstick out of a dead body, either animal or humanoid.

With Discovery the practical effects have not been well thought out

Worst show ever because of Klingon chicken food and fake green paint blood. Noted.

Read again: a major strike in my book. You can love it all day long, and that's great, but I don't.

Yep. All I can do is speak to what does and doesn't work for me. I have no issues with other folks liking/loving the show, I simply don't.

Rewatching it I can see why the show might grate on people. The writing is is all over the place and Burnhams character suffers more than anyone because of this.

However I liked Sarek and the Klingons much more second time around and Lorca just got better.

No point getting mad at them for trying something different with Discovery, if anything they should be applauded for it. If they iron out some of the kinks, the second season should be great.

"Oh shit!" says Data. As a punker gives Kirk and Spock the finger. "Double dumb-ass on you!" Meanwhile Troi asks Crusher, "And you have noticed that your boobs have started to firm up?" To which Crusher says, "Not that we care about such things."

Trek not being on broadcast TV results in the change in the use of language. Before, the only platform was the movies where coarser language would be allowed. Like I illustrated above. Now it's expanded to online series.

In the context of the situation, it works, and Tilly acknowledges what she blurted out was inappropriate, before Stamets (who doesn't exactly strike me as holier than thou) encourages her and says "It is fucking cool". If Captain Pike is briefing an Admiral and says, "That's fucking cool" then that's different. I would take issue.

And the real reason they never swore on the old shows was because they weren't allowed to.

Let's be honest here, Mister Scott would have been cursing a blue streak when a stubborn plasma conduit broke down, or when he got into a bar brawl with some Klingons. The only thing stopping him was NBC's Standards and Practices. :)

And as for the "fucking cool" bit on DISCO, that helped to humanize what could have otherwise been a very dense chunk of expository technobabble and enabled a nice bonding moment between Tilly and Stamets. It was refreshing and delightful.

It's only "dragging Star Trek through the mud" if you think there's something wrong about profanity, as opposed to it just being a colorful mode of expression. And, seriously, do we really think that human beings are going to stop cursing in the future?

Of course not.

The occasional "shit" or "fuck" just makes the DISCO characters seem more human.

I swear more than Tilly did as I am disassembling a PC for repair. What she said was a perfectly natural reaction.

Also, adorable.

I'm really struggling to grasp how people have problems with "fucking cool" and a single pair of Klingon boobs, and completely be fine with this amount of close-ups of gore and knifes cutting through people's flesh in agony.... Americans.

I was amused to discover a few weeks ago that apparently you can now say "fucking" on Lifetime, and not just as an adjective: "Tell me the truth. Are you fucking him?"

And they've dropped a few F-bombs on WYNONNA EARP as well.

As somebody who grew up watching the squeaky-clean American TV of the 1960s, I find this very refreshing.
