Captain Marvel (2019)

Wow, I had no idea that movie had so many familiar faces in it. I saw ages ago, back before I had any idea who most of them were. At the time the only one I knew of was Willem Defoe.

I wonder how long it'll take Wikipeida to finally change that. They've been most insistent he's playing Mar-Vell in both the film article and Law's own article.

Law has also said he was sworn to utmost secrecy over his MCU stuff...I wouldn't put it past them to be using Mar-Vell as a cover story.

Or they've merged Mar-Vell and You-know-who into one character for this story.

So now they don't even have Marvel's actual Captain Marvel in the movie  To be fair, Mar-Vell is the worst version of Marvel's Captain Marvel (Genis-Vell is the best Captain Marvel that Marvel has done, I like carol better overall but she'll always be Ms. Marvel to me), so I guess having one less bland, boring character won't be a big deal. They're already throwing out literally every thing about Carol's character and backstory except her name and that she was an airforce pilot, so keeping Mar-Vell doesn't make sense at this point, anyway.

Oops, I forgot to do an iteration of...

No Mar-Vell?! Worst film ever! Why does Jude Law hate Marvel so much?!? :scream:

Mar-vell was only around for for 15 years before Starlin killed him off, and that was over 30 years ago. He has long since entered the realm of irrelevancy.

Honestly, what purpose would he serve other than to have someone for Carol to take her name from? This version of Carol is not a legacy character, and does not need to be presented as such.

I'm a comics guy, what can I say. I like when they try to follow similar patterns to the comics - the way Iron Man did. They changed the character a lot, but his origin is very familiar, his drinking problem are familiar, his suits are familiar, etc.

Oh, I get that entirely. I have all of those old Captain Marvel comics by Jim Starlin in collected editions on my bookshelf. I'm just thinking about Carol's origin, and realizing that Mar-vell is the least important part of it.

You're right that her origin is complicated, and this is the best way to simplify it. It also keeps Carol from being presented as a damsel in distress in her own origin story. This is Carol's story and Yon-Rogg is the villain who gave Carol her powers in the comics. Mar-vell is unnecessary. Eliminate the middleman.

I felt the same way when they eliminated the Rick Jones character from The Incredible Hulk. I was disappointed, but realized the character just wasn't necessary to tell the story.

Honestly, I'm far more interested in a mar vell movie than a Carol Captain marvel movie. I think this is the first solo movie character that marvel had stripped everything from.

I like how you ignored that I completely shit on Mar-Vell as being extremely bland and boring. The only interesting thing Mar-Vell ever did was die. That said, removing him from Carol's backstory is like having Bruce Wayne's parents survive, but since this movie does not feature Carol danvers or any variation of her character, it makes sense to not include Mar-Vell.

It makes no sense to include Mar-Vell. He's extraneous. Completely unnecessary. He's only needed if you want to see your main character get kidnapped and need to be rescued early on. His only purpose would be to die and be the one that Carol takes her name from. He would be her Yinson. You know, after all this time, I finally see the Green Lantern comparison and it is better avoided.

Oh yeah, instead they're kidnapping and Brainwashing some random airforce pilot and she'll get her powers from some random bullshit. Mar-Vell was intregal to her backstory, full stop. carol never got brainwashed, Carol never served the Kree and her costume was her own invention, not a kree uniform. You cannot have Carol danvers without mar-Vell. But, again, since Carol danvers isn't in the movie, it doesn't make sense to use Mar-Vell anyway. Even as shit as he is, he's still too good for this movie. He deserves better then to be in a movie about some asshole screenwriter's OC that they named Carol danvers so that Disney would pay them for the script.

If you go by Marvel-Time, it's probably been less than 5 years since Mar-Vel died. So although the audience may have forgotten him, the characters, in universe, get happy every time that they think that the Captain is back from the dead.
