But they can remove The silly retcon. Ash/Voq makes it clear if the Augments are around, they do not look human. Darvin was made the same ways as Ash, this was confirmed by the folks in charge on Trek Talk. So yes, they can leave that stupid retcon, but they can not leave them looking human.

Understand this, please: I am NOT saying that you, or anyone else for that matter, should like Discovery. If you don't that's all well and good, and have a nice day. All I am saying is that I do like the show. I don't see the need for you to denigrate me because of this, or to question whether I am really a Star Trek fan. I'm happy to agree to disagree here and move on.

And, as an aside: this above is the reason I am spending less and less time being involved with fandom - all fandom, not just Trek. Sure, there have always been some spirited disagreement in opinion, but I am just getting so tired of this kind of toxic crap. How about we all just enjoy what we enjoy, and let other folks enjoy what they enjoy and leave well enough alone. Happy to argue specific points or opinions, but I don't think we need to get personal about it here.

I think when a thread is framed "... was I supposed to hate this" you might ponder what people may not like about it.

No, you ponder why people have been such irredeemable a-holes about their hatred of it.

There are a number of people out there who are far less gracious about their concerns and criticisms than you. Your concerns have been matters of personal taste about the writing, characters, and tonal choices. Most of the hatred is about casting (diversity), inclusion of gay characters, teh canon, and paywalls. And those people are much louder, angrier and more relentless than you. So, the appearance is that fans HATE the show in some areas.

My understanding is one of her biggest roles in the room was basically to be the "voice of canon" - shooting down the rest of the writer's room whenever they suggest something which outright conflicts with past Trek.

***BIG ASS SPOILERS FOR LATE SEASON 1 EPISODES***

I have no desire to watch season 1 again. I was excited on initial viewing because it has been 13 years since we got TV Star Trek, and I wanted to give the show my best efforts. That said, I disliked the Klingon war, strongly disliked the use of Mirror Georgiou and her new promotion to being part of Section 31, and while we're at it I HATE Section 31. Go away! I also hated the shock value behind killing Culber. The plots were meh, the arc of the war was stupid (IMO), the first two episodes almost caused me to reject the series out of hand (glad I didn't, but holy hell did I find those awful and shame on CBS for giving people half a pilot episode before asking them to cough up the cash to watch the rest. That was bullshit.), the pacing was uneven, some of the scenes were grotesque and I could have gladly done without them, but a few of the characters saved the series first season for me.

First of all, yeah, Tilly in a big way. She feels the most human, the most well-rounded, a normal, flawed, fun, engaging person, and I want to see her succeed. Of all the people in the series up to this point, she holds the most promise for me. I am not kidding when I say that if they decide to do something major to change her character, or kill her off, I would stop watching.

Second, Stamets. I just have this place in my heart for brilliant curmudgeons who are adorably soft and cuddly underneath (Dr. McCoy, as an example). His coupling with Dr. Culber was sweet, and a moment for optimism in Star Trek's future. So of course they had to go and fuck that up.

I like Burnham. She's got issues, but she's also a human raised by a Vulcan, so, of course she has issues. She probably has subscriptions. I'm curious to see where she goes, though, and I just adore SMG.

Let's see, I liked Lorca. I love a Starfleet Captain who prefers being in a gray area when it comes to getting the job done. Tries to do the right thing but does it his own way. Of course, then they go and wreck that all to hell.

Saru is interesting. He's a prey species trying to become much more, and it's fascinating to watch him take command. He holds some promise, too.

Harry Mudd. Rainn Wilson did a great job playing the seemingly lighthearted but deadly underneath jokester. I would like to see him appear again.

L'Rell had her moments. I thoroughly enjoyed Mary Chieffo's efforts to emote and bring depth to the character. They underused her terribly, though.

The rest of the characters didn't leave much of an effect on me.

The look and feel of the show is polished, but someone turn on the damn lights. Anyway, I'll probably sign up for season 2, but it won't be with the same level of enthusiasm I had going into it like I did with season 1.

Culber's back in Season 2 in some way so you might get that again.

Not to nitpick, but you mentioned pretty much all the characters the season focused on. The rest were brief and in supporting roles.

I thought Stamets and Tilly were home runs. I thought Saru was going to be a home run, but couldn't take his character seriously after the "who are the greatest Starfleet captains" stuff. Writers, that should've been something that would've been done by Tilly, if anyone. It made Saru look like a dope.

If they were bound and determined to use Section 31, then they should've ditched the either the Mirror Universe stuff of the Klingon war. Burnham should have been the one who worked for them, with Lorca as her initiator/guide to that world. Like I've said before Burnham's arc was too tidy and packed away too easily.

True, though I would like to learn more about the rest of the bridge crew.

The fuss has been it's been challenging peoples pre-conceived notions of canon. Lots of people don't like this.

Some? Sure. Though many have pointed out flaws in the story, on a point-by-point basis, even people who like the show.

For me, the fuss has been because I find the show and its characters to be quite joyless and dour.

Hopefully season 2 picks up more.

It's amazing for me to see the differences of people's perceptions of the characters. I love it!

They were background extras and this was a 15-episode season. There was no luxury to fully develop Mr. Random Communications Officer Guy.
