So What Are you Reading?: Generations

TNG #57 The Forgotten War by William R. Forstchen and Elizabeth Kitsteiner Salzer.

Why doesn't anyone talk about this one? It's very good, imo. One of the best numbered Trek books I've read and the only reason I have even heard of it is because of its entry in Voyages of the Imagination.

Good premise, interesting new characters, and a lot of great Picard moments. The authors background as a historian really added to the book, too, I think. One of the positives in Treklit, imo, is the diverse background of the authors; it allows for a fresh perspective on characters that I've "known" for decades.

I wish the authors had done more Trek stuff, but apparently they had a somewhat negative experience with the publisher; Salzer didn't even get credit for her contributions for some reason.

My only nitpicks are some minor issues that should have been caught by the editor or proofreader. Sometimes those guys seem to fall asleep at the wheel. If the errors are so obvious that a dummy like me can spot them then there really isn't any excuse for some of this stuff to slip through.

Finished up ST:TNG: Diuble Helix Book 4: Quarantine by John Vornholt yesterday.
I really enjoyed this one. I've had since it first came out in 1999, and was inspired to read it when The Fall used it as part of Tom Riker's backstory.
For those unaware, it's about how Tom Riker ended up joining the Maquis. He actually ends up working with pre-Caretaker Chakotay, B'Ellana, Tuvok, and co. While this could have felt like a bad case of small universe syndrome, I thought Vornholt actually did a good job making it feel natural.
The culture of the planet the book focuses on, Helena, was pretty interesting, with the focus on mixed race individuals.
I liked Vornholt's writing, and the overall story was good, with a nice pace and plenty of interesting developments as it went on.
This has gotten me interested in checking out more of John Vornholt's Trek books.

Have you read his two Dominion War books by any chance? I'm curious about them, but I've never gotten around to actually buying them.

John Vornholt was always one of my favourite authors, and I most liked his early novels: TOS Sanctuary and TNG Masks.

 My god man - that was 20 years ago!

And I thought my "to read" list was getting out of hand.
I have 389 books and comics in my Goodreads account's Want to Read category. Most of these I picked up for a $0.99-$5.99 over the last few years, so it's it quite as bad as it sounds.

I just googled John Vornholt. Then I saw his contributions to the Trek Litverse. I'm amazed how many books by Vornholt I've read so far and how many of them I really liked. I've almost forgotten the Genesis Wave books, they were never translated into German. I also liked Rogue Saucer (Der Test).

Wow Heyne really ran out of ideas for exciting titles there :D

I had to look up the German title. I just remember the cover, the original title and Alynna Nechayev being involved.....

Speaking of titles: Die Rache des Dominion (The Battle of Betazed) was also poorly chosen.

Just posted my review of Across the Universe by Pamela Sargent & George Zebrowski.
Finishing up The Pandora Principle by Carolyn Clowes and moving on to A Time For War, A Time For Peace by Keith R.A. DeCandido for next week's Literary Treks.

You guys should do a book. Sort of an updated Voyages of Imagination, but with reviews and interviews.

Back on topic: I'm about to start the third Khan book.

I've reread the the John Vornholt Dominion war books I really liked them. They're worth reading the Picard storyline is really interesting as well as Riker and the Enterprise crew have alot of interesting things to do in the books as well as Data having his own mission.I recommend them for the fact you get a fast paced I'm now re-reading Star TNG A Time to Heal by David Mack. They're my favorite novels from this miniseries.
