Favorite Non-Adaptation/Non-Franchise SFF Movies since 2000

Well, if Chronicles of Riddick isn't a part of franchise, then neither is Pitch Black.

Pitch Black is worthwhile for its visuals alone. I saw it on the big screen, and I was extremely impressed with the imaginative visuals, particularly during the sunset.

 

Well, I know. I just thought that Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick had different enough tones to be viewed as separate entries, sort of.

 

I think Chronicles of Riddick is unique enough for it to count here, even if it is a sequel.

Lilo & Stitch is highly underrated IMO, I thought it was a lot of fun, but you never really hear much about it these days.

 

Lilo and Stitch is part of a franchise.

Same thing goes for Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick.

 

I need Stitch as a Jedi. I agree, highly underrated. I loved the original and was surprised that it wasn't more talked about. However, there is a great cult following for Stitch which I love.

Just like I love Chronicles of Riddick

Lilo and Stitch was the original. Don't care about the rest as much as I do the original.

Chronicles of Riddick was a unique enough tale and different tone vs. Pitch Black's survival horror that I think it deserves mention. Pitch Black certainly was not constructed as a franchise, and Riddick was basically focusing on Riddick as a main character, unlike Pitch Black.

Still an honorable mention, in my book.

 

I'll make a slight change now, something like Lilo & Stitch that wasn't originally part of a franchise, but became one after the fact is OK.
I just remembered another one, What We Do In The Shadows.

 

^ If Lilo and Stitch is fair game, I'm bringing Avatar and the Matrix films into play.

 

The Matrix was released in 1999, though.

 

^ Reloaded and Revolutions weren't, and they're honestly both amongst my favorite Sci-Fi films from the 2000s.

Same goes for Avatar.

 

I think the idea is that a first film, like The Matrix or Lilo & Stitch, counts as original, but not any subsequent sequels or spin-offs, since at that point the property has become a franchise. By definition, a sequel is not a non-franchise movie.

Avatar definitely counts, though, regardless of how many sequels we eventually end up with. Just not Avatar 2 or 3.

 

Avatar definitely fits, but the original Matrix was pre-2000.

 

Cloverfield would also make my list.

 

Does The Shape of Water count or is that too much of a homage to The Creature from the Black Lagoon?

 

If horror movies count, I'm going to nominate 'Cabin In The Woods'.
It's starts out as a typical teen-horror movie, then slowly the sci-fi elements creep in.
It also has a good twist ending.

 

I was really impressed by that.

Do we get to count Unbreakable then, even though it's now a franchise? Because I liked it a lot.

And even though I didn't think Signs was as good, I thought it was alright.

I won't tell that this undiscovered gem is based on a book if you won't.

 

I'm changing my favorite to About Time. I love that movie.

 

Love Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane, but I haven't seen The Cloverfield Paradox yet.

It counts.
