I loved Picard's jacket! I'm hoping retired Picard wears it in The Picard Show.

I prefer the collared uniforms of S3-S7, but I didn't think the non-collared S1 and S2 uniforms were bad either. It certainly set the show apart from the TOS (series and movies). On a related note, I think the uniforms on Star Trek: Enterprise were the best out of all the ST series.

Uh, yes I did like the shoulder pads. It looked cool when they were ripped open. The uniform she wore in the pilot was the two-peice and the same *uniform* everyone wore. Though I thought the cut at the waist could have been a little neater and actually liked the first one-peice variant she wore because it was close enough. But then it just became silly.

It wasn’t Nana I don’t think who asked for something sexier but just Television for you. That she was highest ranking on the station I don’t think matters. Again, it’s a uniform, and more importantly, that’s rationalizing in-universe what we likely know better out-of-universe. In-universe I could imagine that it’s da future and there could be dozens of variants for individuals to choose from. ...but even there it wouldn’t fit the no-nonsense personality of the character. Neither would the perfect hair and makeup, da future be damned.

Also, poll on best Kira hair? I vote Season 2.

Yeah, he wanted a way to differentiations the captain from the rest of the crew. Brilliant :vulcan: He’s a history buff — he should have broken out Kirk’s old wrap-around.

Me too. I specifically bought the Playmates Space Talk Picard figure because that is my favorite outfit of his. It would take out two birds with one stone if he wore it in the Picard show, because then I wouldn't have to spend any unecessary funds on yet another action figure wearing yet another outfit. :)

Seems like a unique color for captains would be a better idea. "Captain Yellow" perhaps? That would have made him stand out far more among the crew than that jacket

I think they look better with collars. Also the movie maroons in TNG flashbacks looked terrible without the turtleneck. I don't mind the waist-length "jacket" style on TNG, it reminds me of WW2 battledress or Ike jackets, which also had to be tugged into place sometimes. They should have been worn by women too, though.

One-piece, though. Of course we know from "Ensign Ro" that what looked like a one-piece really comes apart at the waist and opens down the front, and when you take off the top your commbadge instantly transports itself to your undershirt.

Personally, I like the original jumpsuits, with their echo of anatomy in the chest muscle cut across, and the clavicles.

I know I'll end up triggering someone here for not citing a reference, but I don't remember where I read this: at one point, Patrick Stewart asked for his costume to be made unique, so they tried out the jacket for a while before going back to the previous uniform.

    EDIT: Found it.

"The captain's uniform was designed by Robert Blackman to make Captain Picard stand out from the rest of his crew, at the suggestion of actor Patrick Stewart. 1 The creation of the jacket was prompted by Stewart raising complaints about how uncomfortable the standard duty uniforms were. Producer David Livingston commented, "It's just something a little more casual for the captain. The genesis of the design was that submarine and aircraft commanders sometimes have a jacket that's special." (Cinefantastique, Vol. 23, No. 2/3, pp. 76 & 77)"

To be fair, the Captain having a unique alternative uniform was not without precedent. Captain Kirk had the green wrap-around tunic for much of TOS season two.

Like much of Blackman's work on TNG, Picard's Captain's jacket looks bulky and unseemly rather than sleek and stylish. I wouldn't be caught dead in that thing!

Maybe just early 1990's 24th century fashion. ;)

Well, if they do it's a regular jacket with extra patches or "CAPTAIN" across the back or something. It's not a completely unique article that nobody else wears. And in TNG, it wasn't just the jacket, it came with a unique shirt, too.

Indeed, though TOS had the excuse of differentiating the two Kirks in "The Enemy Within." I don't really care for the idea in TOS or TNG.

Picard's first jacket was ugly, it looked like an upholsterer made it. The second version just looked kind of dumb. Speaking of collars, it could have used one. Could it even be closed in front? Not exactly what I'd want on a chilly day, anway!

    That jacket? Needs a cape.

Everything is better with a cape.

I think my biggest gripe about the earlier collarless uniforms is that they were spandex. That shiny material just says competitive cyclist to me. I actually like the futurism of them otherwise, even though I do like the collars on the later uniforms.

Maybe if the earlier ones were made with a different material and included collars? The Season 3(?) intermediate ones never looked right to me, or I guess anyone, as they didn’t last long. Maybe it was the extra muscle padding they made the actors wear underneath.

I kinda like the 29th century uniforms though. Maybe if the early TNG ones were made of those materials/tailoring.

I voted collarless above because I think they need more lovin’, but I like the collared uniforms best.

At least Picard had the good sense not to have worn the jacket over jacket. It would have looked stupid if he had worn that captain's jacket over his standard uniform jacket.

The best Captains Jacket was Sisko's unzipped standard uniform.

Are those images from DS9 "Rocks and Shoals"?

IIRC, the entire (crash) landing party wore their jackets the same way, open in front, during combat.

I wonder how many layers of shirts were worn under those jackets.
