i just watched this episode. What is the point of the visions Sisko has of being in a mental institution writing the story of DS9 on the wall. Is it just a wink to the audience that what they are watching is just a “story” created by a mad writer.

"Sarah" explains it near the end of the episode. [Deep breath] ...It was a false vision given to Ben by the Kosst Amojan so as to deter him from freeing the Prophet from the orb on Tyree.

Mainly, it wasn't about having a sensible place in a coherent plot... I think it was more about dropping something abstract in for impact value, with an explanation slapped together for it after.

That scene is a sequel to the season 6 episode Far Beyond the Stars.

Part of the reason watching them in order is a good thing

I enjoyed it. A nice little reference to how far science fiction and television has come.

Of course they could have, but that's not how they wanted to handle things.

How. We know that the Pah Raithes were in a Battle for the temple with the prophets. They had to intervene.

I would love a version of the story where Sisko wasn't predestined to be a prophet. I mean one can say the prophets raped Sarah (kind of like how Picard was kind of mind raped in Inner Light) and that is a very disturbing thought. I think it would have been interesting to meet Sarah as a human and she would not have died.
