Star Trek Short Treks "Calypso" Promo

not to get crazy bogged down in analyzing a 30 second promo for a 15 minute show, but this also caught my eye:

specifically, what's going on with that ortho of the ship? bad graphic or is the ship slightly different from what we're used to?

You mean the dark square cut-out at the aft end of the engineering section? I think that's just supposed to represent the shuttlebay.

There's not much to that very brief preview, but the misty green nebula(?), the abandoned ship, the AI, and the 1,000 year time jump (if real and not an illusion) have me intrigued.

The green of the nebula kind of reminds me of the hand of Apollo from Who Mourns for Adonais? Not that it's likely the two are related in any way, just that it reminded me.

What's a bit irritating about the picture that @pst captured is that, while the dark parts can be explained as the edge at the underside of the belly of the ship where the shuttlebay is - the nacelle struts don't line up either: They don't form that "triangle" that makes the secondary hull of the DIS. It really looks like a different ship (at least a different secondary hull) or - more likely - one of the vfx guys simply using a very, very rough model for this little side-animation, thinking nobody would care this much about it.


That being said: What peaks my interest about this episode - more so than probably any other episode of season 1 so far! - is that we have a genuine mystery staring us in our faces!

Like, I genuine don't know what will happen in this short episode or what it will be about, but the tease is great, and I'm eager to find out! It's not like some "unexpected" twist that is supposed to shock us but somebody catched early ("Javid Iqbal"), or a "twist" ending (Could the Discovery be in the mirror universe?) where we already know or could have guessed the answer.

This is a real mystery. A "what happened", where we have some hunches and theories, but it could end up being something completely different. This is intriguing.

The side view seems to have the nacelles higher than we're used to. Almost looks like a Galaxy class.

It's not about what Netflix wants. If CBS doesn't want Netflix International to have these shorts for....reasons, there's nothi g Netflix can do about.

The news indicates CBS offered these to Netflix for >X< amount of money (because CBS claims they are separate from the series leading many to speculate 'Short Treks' may become something all the CBSAA Star trek related series do in the future); and Netflix declined.

So the deal with Netflix is an a la carte thing, which is what I was thinking. They don't have to pick up any of the Trek items they don't think are worth it for their investment.

Yep - the only 'deal' Netflix has with CBS is for ST: D the series 'proper' (for lack of a better term).

Netflix hasnt shown a lot of interest in dropping episodes one month at a time for ANYTHING. It would seem to me their model is more to give everything at once, and if they buy it as part of season 2 to offer their subscribers, my suspicion is that is how it will be seen.

Bell in Canada got the Short Treks, not sure if that was part of the deal from the start, or because of the apparent tax breaks they get for releasing a show filmed in Canada on a Canadian network.

I can almost guarantee the tax breaks were the reason. That is the whole reason they film in canada

I'm more interested in talking about "Calypso". It was something I didn't know anything about and now it looks like it'll be the short I'm most interested in, potentially. I'm especially curious about the main character.

I didn't realize till watching the Trailer for about the 10th time, that the actor is the "Tech Guy" from "LEVERAGE".

Sometimes I even amuse myself with my own denseness.
