Jesus & Christianity

the lectern in NCC-1701's chapel (The room, don't get filthy) is vaguely cruciform. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but they only showed that room once.

If the Klingons have no Devil as Kang said in Day of The Dove, then how can they believe in a God? :klingon:

OK I grepped the transcripts.

Jesus
Three mentions, all blasphemous:
Enterprise: Storm Front Part I, Carmine
TUC: Bones
First Contact: Cochrane

Christian

Voyager: The Killing Game ( as mentioned up-thread )
KAPITAN: The blazing white circle of the sun that sanctified that blood. No one can deny us, no power on Earth or beyond. Not the Christian Saviour, not the God of the Jews.

Biblical

TOS: The Apple
SPOCK: Captain, you are aware of the biblical story of Genesis.
KIRK: Yes, of course I'm aware of it. Adam and Eve tasted the apple and as a result were driven out of paradise.

TWOK
KIRK: Give up Genesis, she said. What in God's name does that mean? Give it up to whom?
SPOCK: It might help my analysis if I knew what Genesis was beyond the biblical reference.

Those were the only direct references I found. Lots of mentions of Bible too but only in reference to something old.

Bonus round per below: Christmas!

Christmas
DS9: Our Man Bashir
Enterprise: A Night in Sickbay ( The Night Before Christmas )
Enterprise: Regeneration ( Christmas tree similie )
TOS: Dagger of the Mind
Voyager: Caretaker
Voyager: Death Wish ( not in dialogue )
Voyager: The Swarm ( Christmas tree similie )
Voyager: The Omega Directive ( A Christmas Carol )
Voyager: 11:59
Voyager: Survival Instinct
Voyager: Spirit Folk ( Christmas turkey similie )
TWOK ( Christmas tree similie )

Now I'm thinking of Frasier thinking he's speaking Hebrew but it's Klingon :klingon:

Language and spirituality will probably survive a few more hundred years. I'd be more surprised if no references were made.

Christmas is older that Christianity though, it is just Yule with nameswap (and in many countries without a nameswap.)

The holiday known as "Christmas" is an intrinsically Christian celebration.

Other traditions that predate Christianity, that were celebrated around the winter solstice, and that were incorporated into Christmas festivities and/or arguably appropriated by early Christians, and characteristics of which survive in some capacity through today, well, those traditions are the ones that predate Christianity.

Christmas is not "just Yule with nameswap." Christmas has an important religious significance to Christians that the other earlier celebrations do not. It is not necessary to be a Christian to recognize that. In addition, Roman traditions such as gift-giving were handed down and incorporated into Christmas festivities; Yule is Germanic.

While we're on the subjection of traditions or rituals that predated Christianity and that were incorporated into Christianity, baptism is certainly a prominent example of one that Christians consider to have special significance. The da Vinci painting St. John the Baptist is visible in VOY "Scientific Method."

There's a scene in one of the novels (can't remember which one) where Picard says something to Q about "So you're not claiming to be God anymore, just saying that you knew Him?" And Q replies "He's a tough fellow to know, in the strictest sense..." in such a serious and matter-of-fact tone of voice that Picard starts to get chills.

Also there's an ENT episode (Cold Front?) where Phlox mentions attending Mass at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and a VOY episode (don't know which, perhaps Barge of the Dead) where B'Elanna starts getting really into Klingon beliefs and Tom says something like, if you want to explore your spirituality, let's go to church...

And of course Sisko's dad was seen as a preacher in Far Beyond The Stars.

Thanks there.

I am so glad someone else remembers the book Q Squared. That scene with Picard is in there.

If Q can meet God why can't he flick his fingers and send a starship there?

I'm still crushed that "frell" didn't catch on the way "frak" did. :)

It helps that "frack" is a real word, sort of.

Which is why it's so hilarious when you hear about demonstrations against "fracking". :guffaw:

If Q can meet God why can't he flick his fingers and send a starship there?

God is to Q, as Mr. Wilson is to Dennis the Menace.

As for Trelane: I'm liking the idea that he is Q.
