Whereas Starfleet Academy is the Trek I have been waiting for
To each his own.
From the little that is rumoured about it, it sounds like it could end up being a teen drama kind of show, set in Starfleet Academy of course.Whereas Starfleet Academy is the Trek I have been waiting for
It has a kind of logic to it, and it is a genre that can be popular. I think if the Academy is going to become a show, I would rather have it more of a University setting so adults, with a healthy focus on the teaching staff as well as the students. The Simulator, seeing what life is like in the 24/25th Century, and following a class from day one to graduation before either re-inventing itself with a new cast, or just ending.
And a point that I haven't seen mentioned...
What if the Picard show IS Starfleet Academy. What if Picard is running the Academy, and he is like a Headmaster/Administrator role, and he is teaching/moulding the next Next Generation? What if the students have other ideas that go against the ideals the Federation once stood for?

No, the Starfleet Academy show has different showrunners...
We don't have any information on Starfleet Academy.
Yes we do. It's being developed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.
Also they're not going to lure in the 13 Reasons Why / Riverdale crowd with a show led by Picard.

Variety have been spot on so far, so why would they be wrong about this?
"Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" and "Star Trek: Ceti Alpha V" (the Khan miniseries) will be announced soon. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" has already been announced for 2 seasons. "Star Trek: Short Treks" is already out.
"Star Trek: Revolution", "Star Trek: Destiny" and "Star Trek: Reliant" are coming too, one of which is the Picard series, another is a miniseries of some sort, and the last one is completely new and previously unteased.
