The Pale Moon light great episode!

The alternative was for the writers to write a different story. In TNG this would have been about Picard foiling the crazy plans of some murderous rogue Strarfleet officer, thus gaining the trust of Vreenak, thus eventually getting the Romulans to help.

They would have to write a different Vreenak as well. This one was too far gone.

Why? He was part of a legitimate Starfleet operation, which was in its rights counter recent Romulan actions.
Sisko conspired to murder a foreign diplomat and his aides. The end. You may like such actions being written for a main character in a Star Trek series, I most definitely don't. I want Star Trek to be about finding a better way.

No, he was an unwilling accomplice to it, he didn't conspire to do it, he didn't plan to kill them, that was all Garek, on his own, without permission or Sisko's knowledge.

He's guilty of covering it up, that's it..

Romulans stole a Federation vessel, an act of war.

I think the whole point of DS9 was to expose the flaws of StarFleet.

No. When he involved Garak, he knew where it could, and probably would, lead. He can't wash that green blood from his hands.

And I didn't particularly like that. I especially didn't like that when it is the main characters who are the ones who are shown to morally falter in such a massive degree.

If he did he wouldn't have been so upset that he attacked Garak in his shop.

Or Garak proved that he was smarter than Sisko. Sisko hates that. Remember that when Michael Edington outsmarted him Sisko started punching things around and ended dropping bombs on children. Sisko's ego is very big.

I never said it did.
Well, either Sisko knew what could happen, or he is an colossal idiot. There really is no other options. Well, maybe some combination of the two, so that he really knew what would happen but choose to lie himself that it wouldn't.

Ultimately it wasn't a good story to do with a main character of a Trek show, especially as there was never any comeuppance or even an absolution arc. It was a story about murder getting things done, couple of man tears, the end, bygones.

But I'm tired of this discussion, I've done this so many times. We're not going to agree.
