How many Miles is Deep Space Nine?

Kate Nichols

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I've seen about 10 episodes so far, and skipped ahead to His Way since I heard all that stuff about that sexy kiss. Then, I sort of have gone ahead more, so I'm missing some basics. Kira mentioned to Oda that there were many other restaurants that they could go to, but then again, everyone seems to have quarters near each other. So, is this a small city or similar to a large Starship?

It's more like a town with extensive docks. I believe that it is said that the station can hold seven thousand people. I would assume that would be crew, residents and visitors.

Also the command crew quarters are probably in one area of the station, with another section for senior officers and another for junior. And then the civilians are given the remaining quarters. Plus I wouldn’t be surprised if there were sections for races like the Benzite that need methane and other gasses to breath.

If there are several thousands aboard, most are bound to be civilians. Would that mean there's also a civilian authority there, apart from Sisko (military authority). We know Odo is constable, so there is some police force to keep the station safe, but would there be someone like a "DS9 mayor" ?

Well, there was the head of the promenade merchant's association.

Seeing what they were able to do with Yorktown in Beyond, I can't help but wonder what a current take on Ds9 would be like. I think (might be wrong) the movie Elysium was the first attempt to show a really truly large toroidal space station in detail. Obviously DS9 would not be built for that kind of beauty, but in terms of scale and showing people in the background living out their lives it would be interesting.

I don't know the exact measurements. Wikipedia lists "Length" at 1451 meters, and I have no idea if they mean diameter of the primary ring or distance nadir to zenith, or if the figure was pulled from a hyoomon orifice. I suspect it's diameter.

Interestingly,(or boringly depending on how you care about this stuff) the dimensions aren't TOO far off the Stanford Torus, a space habitat first proposed in the 1970s, which would have diameter of 1790 meters and a rotation of 1 RPM, permitting a population of between 10,000 to 140,000 persons depending on whether farming was done en situ or elsewhere. With essentially 20th century tech.

I'd say DS9 as shown is a bit underpopulated :D

A DS9 done Yorktown-style would be...

...well, I don't think I can quite wrap my brain around that...

Even the novelverse's new DS9 wasn't that ambitious.

Since its was a Cardassian design for slave labour it won't be as user friendly as Yorktown (or pretty)
