Is Spectacle better than character development?

It's really not even valid to judge an entire show for one season. If you stopped watching TNG after season one you wouldn't think much of it other than it being TOS with a bald captain. Buffy season one would be interesting really hit or miss. But in the short 15 episode season we got of Discovery, we got some fairly well developed characters with decent arcs. That's just going to continue in season 2 and beyond. Discovery might end up being one of the best Trek series by the time it ends. People were trying to write it's eulogy by the time the first episode aired.

TNG was NEVER TOS with a bald Captain. TOS Season 1 was great and had some very interesting science fiction based stories. TNG Season 1 was just plan crap. (So, yeah, sorry as a TOS fan who saw the premiere of TNG first run in 1987 and (unlike many of my friends) stuck with it and saw the whole TNG first season, I'd say your characterization of TNG Season 1 does a disservice to what TOS was. )

I was going with the idea that it was seen as a ripoff with a few things changed. I was too young to be aware of the fan reaction at the time, but based on what I've read the consensus was that it was just a poor copy at the time.
