Anyone else digging it? I've got just a couple episodes left to watch. So far it it's building nicely on the first 2 seasons and starting to delve more deeply into its own sci-fi side. Discuss!
I've been meaning to watch since it was released but hadn't had the chance yet. I think I'll finally get to it today.
I binged the entire season last week I love this show Spoiler Stop making me feel bad for a Nazi, like damn show, you’re giving me mixed signal here. Poor Smith. Sometimes I want him to get the win, but then remember what the hell he is. J. Edgar Hoover is a bastard in both universes it seems
I went through the entirety of Season 3 in something like 3 evenings. Writing has kept up from the previous seasons fairly well; no big dip in quality. That being said, Frank's outcome made sense in the grand scheme, but Juliet's arch is just getting more and more unbelievable. For a while there I thought Smith was going to have to cap his wife, she was a thorn in his side most of the season. Glad she finally grabbed the girls and split. Smith seems like he's inching closer and closer to aiding the resistance. Great show, can't wait for Season 4! (in 12-14 months... drat) Q2
Got through three and a half episodes before the power went out because of Hurricane Michael. The gap between seasons made me forget how much I love this show. While the show has diverted largely from the novel that I love so much, it's truly come into its own and for the better. It continues to do fascinating things with all of the characters, American, Japanese, and even Nazis alike. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out. Whenever I get power back... Also, Frank Fink lives!!
Finished it today; excellent break point for a 2-season arc the same way the first two seasons were. Unfortunately, I can't go straight to S4 the way I was able to with S1. Now I must wait.
There really was a George Lincoln Rockwell. Wow. Forgotten American history. I think Smith—John Smith the Everyman against the Nazi Superman?—joined the Nazis just to survive, and now he is considering taking his family and traveling to another universe—if he can. Failing that, I see him moving more and more toward the resistance. What I find interesting is the very existence of the neutral zone and why neither empire has invaded it for their own, or why no large numbers of people are flocking to it. Took me three seasons but "pons"/Nippons. And, "You can smell them?" Best scene.
He, our universe's version, is buried about 100-120 feet from my great-great-grandfather in Washington's Congressional Cemetery, in a plot with his siblings that's surrounded by a fence. Suffice it to say, I've been there, most recently about a month ago.
The problem is that he now knows that he and his family can only travel to a 'verse where they don't currently exist- and he has no way of knowing which parallel verse that might be from where he's standing now. Unlike someone who just naturally 'travels', taking your chances with the Nazi machine and being wrong means you get pulped into...well, pulp on the platform. I think both sides recognize the value of a 'no-man's land' buffer between the two. It provides a relief valve for the otherwise dangerously rebellious to flee to, a place where meetings and deals between the two empires can be struck 'on the down low,' and a source of information for both sides against the other in terms of spies and 'man on the street' news moving between each empire and the neutral zone.
So.... Spoiler Where do you think Juliana traveled to? Couldn't be the same world Tagomi went to, because she was alive in that world. It makes me wonder if she traveled to the world in which Joe is still alive and she saw herself shot in the head- it would mean there are also multiple versions of the world where the bad guys won, and possibly several versions of the resistance.
Nothing will ever match the intensity of the first season, such as the gassing of the Frinks or Juliana finding Trudy's body. The proposition that Juliana is the center of multiverse is still a horrible case of Chosen One badness. The show has succumbed to The Good Place nonsense about demonic characters we hang with and see being non-demonic must eventually become friends or we get rid of them...but since it's a series and getting rid of the characters means not selling the series to a network any more, so woobify, woobify, woobify. The series has also become about how "we" beat the Nazis and Japanese. There's zero suspense now, you know the magic Juliana is going to win. I think they should have ended the series with Himmler seeing the portal open, seeing to his horror Red Army soldiers from an alternate world where the Communists won storming through.
THAT would have been pretty awesome! Or what about the world where it's the Japanese who have the better tech and the Nazis have fallen by the wayside?
Also, as a former Navy guy I have to say that not only do I love the imagery of the CGI Yamato, the sight of it and the rest of the Japanese Fleet sailing around in SFO bay is chilling- every American's worst nightmare in January of 1942.
Spoiler Was she alive in the universe where her 'sister' came from? If not she may have gone there Those were some of the best shots of the season. The aircraft carrier in that fleet appears to be based off a WW2 Japanese carrier design, but with some modifications, mostly the flight deck, to make it more modern (well what was considered modern in our 60s) The helicopter however is a soviet design. Spoiler The Admiral of the fleet is named Inoguchi, he might be, or just named after Vice Admiral Toshihira Inoguchi, who was on board the Musashi (another Yamato-Class) when she was sunk in 1944 in real life The Nazi VTOL seen later in the season is actually based on a real VTOL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dornier_Do_31
Another excellent year. Like the way they have developed the characters. But am I forgetting something from last year? Was Tagomi dead in the other timeline he visited? He saw his wife and son and Juliana and no one was shocked to see him alive
Yes, the other Tagomi was dead. That Tagomi was an alcoholic and apt to disappear for days, so when the Trade Minister Tagomi appeared it seemed to be just another return. I've forgotten how the other Tagomi died, something vague about falling into water while drunk seems to float up...
I finally got power restored last night so I was able to finish the season. While I initially was disappointed that Frank returned from the dead only to die again by the end of the season, I do like how the season set-up how his death and Juliana's departure to another parallel world has left a vital vacuum that is filled by their friends and comrades to continue their work, work that will grow only stronger with their absences. On the West Coast, Ed, Jack, and Robert spread Frank's art on the grand scale Frank dreamed of, while on the East Coast, Wyatt and his group rapidly spread copies of the film Juliana dearly hoped would ignite people to finally wake up and resist. This is the part of the show I've always loved the most and I'm thrilled that's going to be a major part of the next season. The rest of the season was good, but I have to be honest, aside from John Smith and Takeshi Kido, I'm largely only interested in the characters from the original novel. I was particularly bored by Helen's struggles to overcome the loss of Thomas, especially her sessions with her psychiatrist. I get what they were going for but it just didn't click for me. Likewise, I was largely disengaged with Nicole's story after she left Joe's orbit. Again, I appreciate what they were trying to do but it didn't really work for me. Conversely, Joe is the one character from the novel that I never cared for, even if the show improved on his original, largely two-dimensional characterization, I never found myself sympathizing with him (certainly not to the degree I do with John), so I don't mind his death at all. Especially by Juliana's hand. With Frank dead for good, Joe finally gone, and Juliana separated from everyone else, the show has reduced the original novel characters down to just Tagomi, Ed, Robert, and Hawthrone (who is largely different from the novel anyways). I'm not too concerned about this shift because of the hope of resistance is now growing stronger, but I hope the show is able to develop better original characters. Actually, I take back my original aside because I greatly enjoyed seeing the St. Theresa's community as well as the return of Mark Sampson, who I had forgotten about. Even though Frank is no longer there, I do hope we see more of them, especially since the show took the time to develop Mark's girlfriend, Lila. I hope as the two coastal uprising movements grows strength, the community will change their minds and decide it's better to resist than to hide. On a final note, was anyone else as disappointed as I was with how the show utterly wasted Michael Hogan? He barely appeared and had very few lines before dying. As soon as I saw his photograph on Kido's board, I figured he was going to play a major role in the resistance efforts and then...nothing. On the flip side, we now have three Cylons show up in the resistance. Is it too much to hope for Lucy Lawless to show up next season? Yeah, no kidding. The way I justify any sympathy for him is that he was once an American who became a Nazi to save himself (and Helen? I can't remember). Not an excuse for his actions as a Nazi, but it's a path towards redemption that I could live with. I loved that as well. Kudos to William Forsythe for making him as smarmy as I always imagined him to be. From the moment they spewed that shit, I greatly looked forward to that scene. The "huh?" look on their faces as Mark revealed himself was the absolutely best. Yeah, that also struck a chord with me as a former Navy guy. I was really impressed how well that fleet looked and how chilling their presence felt in San Francisco Bay. Trudy noted that her Juliana was dead, so that's precisely where I imagine Juliana went. Yeah, I believe he had just committed suicide so "our" Tagomi was able to just pretend he returned from one of his benders.
