Spoilers Discovery and the Novelverse - TV show discussion thread

For the books maybe, but for the franchise as a whole, it's great.

And really, we’ve enjoyed a nearly twenty year stretch of ongoing continuity and storylines. IF the new series manages to unravel that entirely, which is still just a possibility at the moment, that’s a damn good run.

And that’s still a worse case scenario. While the series will have no obligation to abide by the novels take on anything, it’s also fully capable of resulting in just telling its own story without causing any upset. I mean, it IS supposed to be set in a future timeframe than any present novel, and there’s no telling what it will be about at this point - no need to jump to ‘it’s the end of the novel continuity as we know it!’ at this point.

Doug Jones revealed the name of Saru’s homeworld at the NYCC panel last week “Kamanar”, not sure if that contradicts the DSC novels or not. I don’t remember if any of them actually gave a name.

I think I heard that the name did differ from the one in the book. But that isn't necessarily a contradiction. After all, Earth is also Tierra, Erde, Chikyuu, Zemlja, etc. depending on the language you use.

I did a quick search in “Fear Itself” it’s called “Kaminar”. So I think it’s the same or close.

One website transcribed the name from the panel as ‘Kamanar’

TrekCore however uses the novel spelling.

Aaaaaaaand if anyone was curious, that's how binding to the series anything in the novels is.

While that's true, it's also true that even canon isn't strictly binding when it comes to small details like nomenclature. For instance, TNG: "Heart of Glory" called the Klingon homeworld "Kling," but then it became Kronos/Qo'noS. And then we have more minor tweaks like Vulcanians becoming Vulcans, the Bajora becoming Bajorans, and Andor becoming Andoria.

Still, I think the point stands, anyone who thinks there's any kind of chance of the Picard series preserving and being faithful to the Litverse Continuity ought to take note that Disco is already being inconsistent with its novels.

Is anyone wondering if DSC Season 2 will give Number One a real name?
Probably depends on how big of a role she has. If it's just a few scenes in one episode, I could see them getting around saying her name, but if it's a significant multiple episode arc, I'm thinking they'll have to at some point.

Nope. Kelpia is mentioned in Saru's internal monologue.

If he's thinking in English, he might use the English name out of habit. A German talking about their country in English will call it Germany instead of Deutschland. And if he's not thinking in English, then it's been translated for our benefit by the chronicler, and thus the name might have been translated as well.

I don't think they cast someone like Rebecca Romijn just for a couple scenes in one episode.

I don't know about Romijn specifically, but I've seen quite a few higher profile actors play significant characters for a one off appearance.
I have a feeling how much she is on will probably depend on how long the Enterprise sticks around. So far we've only seen her in the new TOS style uniform, so I'm thinking Pike probably leaves her in command of the Enterprise while he's on Discover.

Yeah, she probably shows up a few episodes down the line as Pike is in his DSC uniform when he meets here on the Discovery.
