Looks like we will have a fully bearded Lieutenant Spock on Discovery

Tuvok better than Spock? Now I've heard everything!

And I say that as a fan of Voyager.

I can see the argument.

Leonard Nimoy in some ways had the easier job. He was making up Spock and the whole Vulcan race as he went along. Oh, of course the writers elaborated upon it themselves. But many of the central ideas - such as shifting to playing a cool unemotional character to bounce off the greater energy of Shatner - seem to have come from him. Famously, so did live long and prosper. And of course, ultimately they made Spock only half-Vulcan, so he was always going to be seen as more his own thing.

After Nimoy, it was hard to find a way to be a Vulcan without just doing a Spock impression (or worse, acting like a robot). Tim Russ was the first person since Mark Lenard who seemed to get it, and crafted a persona which was "authentically Vulcan" yet still a different person from Spock.

I think you guys misunderstood the post. I think they were just saying Russ played a better Vulcan, I don't think they were saying Tuvok was a better character then Spock.

I think folks have forgotten that Tim Russ gives full blown credit to Leonard Nimoys "Spock", as to how and why Tuvok came across so well.
It may have been Tim's interpretation, but it was all based on what Leonard originally brought to the screen.
;)

Didn't Tuvok have some kind of disease that made managing his emotions difficult? Or was that a victim of the Voyager reset epidemic?

Totally. I said he built on it. But what he built, and Mark Lenard, was I think a better performance.

To further bolster the thought that Hipster Spock has a beard because he's been away/indisposed for awhile: he isn't wearing his Starfleet uniform.

Apparently, the only two 'chicks' Spock was ever really interested in (romantically) were Uhura & Leila Kalomi.
And he didn't need a beard for them to love him.
:adore:
(conniving T'Pring was never in the running)

With all the terrible things that are happening in this world, I think we all need to remain focused, like a laser, on the TRULY OUTRAGEOUS events, such as a fictional character (as seen in few brief frames of a preview of a single season of a streamed show) having a beard.

Honestly, it makes me feel better to have something so silly to complain about as Star Trek. It means my world hasn't entirely crumbled yet.
