You know what I bet they were thinking about. Superman with a beard and without a shirt in "Man in Steel." more than thinking about making him a hipster. Take a Iconic character known for being kind of a square and try and ruffle so him in a new presentation a little bit. I bet he shaves it soon as he returns to Starfleet.

Depends on your branch of the Generic religions. Spock died and was born again in the third film. Sisko journeyed to the promised land of his people, and people believe he will come again. The Picard walked among us to tell us to be better people, but not hold ourselves beholden to higher powers. The Janeway stole coffee from the gods. The Archer was the one who was cast down by fandom, and is something of an esoteric cult. The one true Kirk of course, gave rise to all these faiths, but many believe he was prefigured by a relatively little known sect that came from going to a party with some Armenians, known as the Pike. A modern sect claims descent from these two early branches of the Generic faiths, but many see it as a violent sect, rewriting the sacred texts to suit its own political purpose. This has already led to sectarian violence in the holy places, but some believe a reformation is in process.

If Klingons shave to go to war... Then sporting a beard is like a white flag to them, so maybe it's just Spock being unprovocative in Klingonpace?
Pretty it's about not having the opportunity and equipment to shave.
Then maybe Spock could encourage his sister to grow a beard as she's a dab hand at provoking Klingons to war.
Maybe little Spock starts shaving after his beardo brother Sybok becomes a pariah?
