That's kinda humorous, cause the way CBS is treating Star Trek and it's Fandom lately, seems to advocate for an obvious use of piracy.

Yeah, well, I don't work for CBS, so that's not my problem. Here, it's against the rules to promote piracy.

Firstly, do one.

Secondly, since starting the thread, CBS Studios International announced a special agreement with another broadcaster for their other big CBS All Access series, basically confirming it won't be moving to CBS All Access's UK version. There's no end date to that agreement either - as long as The Good Fight stays in production, it'll be exclusive to Channel 4.

There isn't such an agreement announced for Netflix and Star Trek, I wasn't aware Episode 2 of Short Treks wasn't a Discovery story, and I also refreshed on comments made by CBS that Netflix doesn't automatically have the rights to new Star Trek series, which Short Treks likely falls under.

Then I thought about why wouldn't they just pick this series up, especially when Discovery is a top series in markets like the UK, and concluded it's probably down to a stalemate.

Netflix wants exclusivity over the future of Star Trek.

CBS Studios International don't want to sign the Picard series away, given it's the only established franchise they can launch CBS All Access with in the UK, now they've signed away The Good Fight.

Short Treks is collateral damage.

CBS feels like a lowest common denominator station these days. I realize that most of the real revenue is moving online, or has been moving online for some time, but their lineup is filled with dreck. That's completely subjective, true, but considering their poorly implemented app, their utter lack of foresight in preparing for millions of viewers to watch new Star Trek, and their inability to seemingly work with 3rd parties like Netflix to distribute their properties overseas, even though it is said they have an International studio, I mean, it just all reeks of low effort put forth in an attempt for maximum profit.

I want Star Trek Discovery to succeed, but this all feels like UPN all over again.

I could fully believe the original deal was for one year (due to the cost); BUT WITH an option to continue for subsequent years IF Netflix wanted - and since Season 2 was confirmed pretty quickly, I'd say Netflix considered ST: D profitable for them pretty quickly out of the gate and they exercised the option for a second season. (Effectively meaning: No they didn't 'want out of the deal'). :)

It's pretty clear that CBS didn't include other 'new' Star Trek streaming series as CBS wanted more money for the 'Short Treks' series from Netflix to stream on Netflix and Netflix declined. It may be that 'Short Treks' may include vignettes from the other Star Trek CBSAA shows CBS is planning; and that' how they'll support their position that "Short Treks" is it's own series; and not just wholly ST: D related.

CBS doesn't have a lot of sci-Fi/Fantasy content, but many of my friend LOVE CSI, NCIS, and there other 'Procedural Crime' type series. remember CBS also owns part of the CW and it appears that's the network they're putting all the sci-fi/fantasy/comic book content on to with a lot of success.

This is going to sound snobby, but I'd like to make the disclaimer that people are free to enjoy whatever they like, and it doesn't make them bad or silly for liking it, but...

I consider modern crime dramas and procedurals to be one step above reality shows, and only barely. The writing is often clunky and lazy, the plots are "based on actual events," or "ripped from the headlines" and then heavily dramatized while utterly failing to make an actual point, and the acting ranges from decent to hilariously bad, with shows like "Law & Order," just reinforcing that "we didn't bother to see if this was remotely plausible" aspect. They even do it with many of their other shows, I mean "Two and a Half Men," "The Big Bang Theory" along with "Young Sheldon," and so on, and so on, and these shows are just some of the laziest, poorly executed programs. CBS just feels like a "fuck it, we tried something" network these days. I honestly wish they didn't own Star Trek.

As opposed to 1960's NBC, that had such highbrow shows at the same time as TOS as the Monkees, I Dream of Jeanie, Flipper, Tarzan, My Mother The Car, Captain Nice, Hey Landlord!, (and the late 60's equivalent of the police procedural, numerous westerns)

Trek isn't as serious a show as this weird plinth of aspirations we've build for it to sit on would indicate. It's occasionally well thought out, often not so well thought out, fun sci-fi pulp for the small screen.

I guess they've kind of been a shit network for decades. My bad. :lol:

That said, it's not that I consider Star Trek to be highbrow, it's not. It is a fun show, with some more dramatic elements, and sometimes with good messages underneath, I'm more concerned about the whole laziness aspect of CBS and how they approach things.

I respect your opinion, and share at least some of it, however CBS has been the number 1 network for 14 of the last 15 seasons. While it may not be our cup of tea, it appears to be what network viewers want to watch which is why they make more of it.
 
So, I just found out Space in Canada is going to be airing Short Treks. Which I find pretty damn amusing, a cable channel in Canada will air this but it won't be available on Netflix in any other countries.

In fact, whoever negotiated the rights for Bell Media to Star Trek must be a bloody genius. They've somehow secured exclusive broadcast rights to Disco in Canada to the point that the Canadian CBS All Access outlet isn't allowed to air it, and now Canada is the only country outside the US to get Short Treks. We got it made in the shade.

Though, I'm sure complications will arise with the Picard series or the other shows in development.

They make more of it because it's safe, stable programming. CBS hasn't rocked the boat, and so they sail on, slowly and predictably, and that comforts the people in their older demographic, which is also their largest demographic. That demographic won't be sticking around too much longer, and their younger viewers are tuning out. This is why we're seeing a rash of new shows that appeal to younger audiences, because CBS knows its programming is more suited to those who want the same thing served up to them, just with different names (again, The Big Band Theory and Young Sheldon as an example). CBS tends to reach for the lowest rung and declare its job finished, and they've got the demographic that says "yeah, safe, stable, comfortable, this is what we want."

Now, that is perfectly fine for people to want safe, stable, comfortable programming, but I don't think safe, stable, comfortable Star Trek is as much fun, IMO. I mean, for CBS, Star Trek Discovery is probably as far out there as they're willing to go, as they've finally acknowledged a same sex couple living together in the future
while still managing to kill one of them, at least for now
. It's a step above previous Trek from decades past, but it's way, WAY behind the curve compared to other shows on other networks.
