Supergirl - Season Four

Maybe that friend. J'onn meets is Superman. Always need to know what Supes is up to.:) Actually it would kind of make sense if they would do a surprise cameo and maybe set up the Batwoman show/Arrowverse crossover. Who knows maybe they would spin his character off on that show.

James's indictment is an unexpected and potentially interesting development.

That's so serious that it should not only be one of the majors arcs of the season, but possibly leading to the character's departure from the series, as I cannot imagine any attorney successfully defending the actions of a vigilante, not matter how good his intentions were. On the other hand, if he was exonerated, it might lead others to think they are justified in taking the law into their own hands. This is where other DC characters might find their way into the series.

^ My expectation is they will take the opportunity to explore a very valid point: Why is James playing the vigilante different in any meaningful way from what Supergirl does? And yet she's loved and lauded as a hero, while he gets prosecuted as a criminal. Whatever could be the perceived difference between them? Hmmm ....

I've said that before: Supergirl working for the DEO doe not give her (or anyone else there) legal authority to act in a law enforcement capacity like a police officer, so aside from the complaints of the Luthors and Morgan Edge, SG and the Guardian are on the same scale of judgement--or should be.

Heh..great point. I'm not sure this show will have the stones to explore any of the directions that "perceived difference" might take. Black Lightning? In a heartbeat, but Supergirl...? It would take a writer willing to dive into bleak commentary on society that makes both characters and audience members who reached their conclusions of vigilantes (consciously or not) based on those perceptions uncomfortable, perhaps angry that it was called out at all, but that would be fascinating to see.

Actually, it does, because the DEO is a federal agency, albeit one whose existence is classified by order of the President.

Well, they've at least touched on similar issues before. Recall J'onn saying he wouldn't be accepted in his alien form like Supergirl is, because he doesn't look like a "pretty blonde cheerleader."

Besides, I think Supergirl's problem in dealing with such a topic would be less one of stones than of skill. They're perfectly willing -- all too willing, according to many viewers -- to address social and political issues, but they tend to lack the finesse and depth that Black Lightning's writers bring to the table.

Yes, but audiences would not feel J'onn's observation like they would if that same statement came from a human character talking about his race, for example.

...and if James faces the law, this is where Supergirl's writers might fail when such a story requires deep understanding of how he--and society will treat him, along with the contrast with Supergirl. Viewers can only hope the SG showrunners do their homework to handle so serious a subject--or...bring in some of Black Lightning's writers.

Actually, it does, because the DEO is a federal agency, albeit one whose existence is classified by order of the President.

According to FBI.gov--

In the U.S. and its territories, FBI special agents may make arrests for any federal offense committed in their presence or when they have reasonable grounds to believe that the person to be arrested has committed, or is committing, a felony violation of U.S. laws. On foreign soil, FBI special agents generally do not have authority to make arrests except in certain cases where, with the consent of the host country, Congress has granted the FBI extraterritorial jurisdiction.

In other words, they do not act in the way of local law enforcement unless it involves a federal offense. Additionally, Supergirl was acting as a law enforcer before she joined the DEO, so any perception differences between SG & Guardian as vigilantes would still apply.

If Supes is showing up in this ep, I would think it would be to support James rather than simply checking in with J'onn.

Both ways kind of work. Or he could do both things in the episode. Which I guess would maybe amount to 2 to 3 scenes all together. If this was the case I figure though this would have been leaked but who knows. Maybe they could sneak him in the episode.

Kevin Smith is getting in good shape. He seems to have made a major improvement since that heart attack a few months back.

Supergirl seems happy in that picture, which is weird because she's standing right next to Doomsday :borg:

:techman:

Jokes aside, its cool to see Kevin Smith staying in shape (although I've seen it before, since I follow him on Twitter). Smith, Witwer and Supergirl are literally the only people I recognize in that pic, although I have no idea who Witwer is playing (although his role will probably be better then his role in Smallville, and I say that as someone who liked Smallville).

From left to right, next to Smith is new cast member Nicole Maines (who actually has an interesting bit of real world history that I was not aware of until I looked her up on Wikipedia, which also makes her a great bit of casting for a show like Supergirl), who plays Nia Nal/Dreamer, Jesse Rath who plays Brainiac 5, and on the far end is David Ajala who plays Manchester Black.

Gotta admit, I'm torn as to what to watch first tonight: Supergirl or Doctor Who?

I'm going with Who first, since if perchance something went wrong with my DVR, I'd have both On Demand and The CW's website as fallbacks to watch Supergirl, whereas with Who I'd only have On Demand, as far as I know. This is the hypercautious way my mind works.

Besides, Who runs 10 minutes longer than Supergirl, so I can start watching the DVRed SG episode right after Who ends, instead of having that 10-minute gap in between. (I am curious about the new Charmed, but it can wait until later.)
