The X-Men Cinematic Universe (General Discussion)

An infinite number of stories to tell, and they're redoing a movie they already did in the franchise.

DOFP is where the series officially just ended for me.

As long as Marvel doesn't do a third Dark Phoenix story, I will be happy. The characters have all been recast already (except Wolverine), so I'm not at all worried about these shoes being filled by others. And the sooner they leave Jennifer Lawrence behind the better.

Meh. After the mistakes of X3 (which obviously they know about given the retcon of DOFP and that little line in Apocalypse) I was expecting something completely different. Yet this looks like a pretty straight up remake of a lot of it.

Granted it's a only a teaser and I'll withold a judgement, but just saying can't say I'm super excited for it anymore.

Wow, that looks great.
I really don't see how people can say this is just a remake of The Last Stand, doesn't look anything like it to me. It looks like a very different take on Jean, there's no Wolverine, Rogue, Iceman, and no sign of the whole cure storyline.

Agreed on everything. It would be like calling The Dark Knight a remake of Burton’s Batman. Merely because they both feature the Joker?! They share the same source material not an exact remake at all.

Well, I hope they go out with a bang. I hope they keep some of the cast around for the FOX movies if possible McAvoy and Fassbender redeemed that terrible Apocalypse script.

I suspect it's the trailers focus on Xavier and Magneto crossing swords yet again that brings the comparison to mind. It's clearly designed to echo the two of them fighting over Jean in the last stand. And it's nothing to do with source material. Magneto doesn't really even belong in the Dark Phoenix saga, let alone being a central character. But it seems no one at fox has ever dared consider making an x-men film without him, regardless of whether he fits the story or not (as Apocalypse proved). Still, it's only a teaser and it could very well be this is only a small part of the film.

And even if it is just a do-over of TLS with no cure story, we already know it will at least be better than TLS. Removing the cure stuff has got to improve the focus and let Jean actually feel like the central character. And Dark Phoenix actually has Cyclops. (I will never understand how anyone thought they could do a dark phoenix story without cyclops.)

^ There are also "echoes" of The Last Stand in that the Phoenix is still something inside Jean that Xavier tried to control or suppress.

And Jean being angry at oir heroes and finding Magneto in his camp of villains.
And our heroes being angry at the professor for what he did to young Jean.
And someone ending up dead because of what Jean unleashes.
And...

^ Whether or not that is a problem is "in the eye of the beholder", but there are definitely some differences this time around: no Logan, a cosmic 'trigger' for Jean's transformation, the setting (early 90s) and an alien threat looking to exploit Jean for their own benefit, so calling it a straight-up remake of TLS is stretching just a bit.

That's true but the mental block as an attempt to suppress Phoenix, at least, is actually from the source material. And I'm pretty sure there was a point somewhere in the comics where they actually thought 'Phoenix' was just Jean's powers dialed up to infinity (before the 'Phoenix Force' was invented) but I can't for the life of me figure out which comic that was.

Sure, why tell a 100% brand new story when people will be satisfied with 50% new story.

It's Into Darkness all over again. You reboot a franchise for unlimited story potential... then go back to retelling an older one.

I never said it was a perfect adaption, but yes, it's an adaptation whose central focus is the Dark Phoenix, rather than merely superficial trappings like X3. I remember X3 as way more about the Cure story than Dark Phoenix. I don't know what the actual story ratio in X3 is, however.

I might actually see this one, I passed on Apocalypse, but... I find Sophie Turner a pretty limited actor, so... it's a very strong might.

Agreed. X3 was rubbish. I've been wanting see the story done better on the silver screen.
