Gambit has never been able to sustain an ongoing book of any significant length, even at arguably the height of his popularity in the 90s. He works ok as part of a group (the current Mr & Mrs X comic with him and Rogue is good), but solo he's just not that interesting, and it feels really weird that FOX has just kept trying and trying to make a solo gambit movie work.

Gambit's whole thing is that everytime they ran into a bad guy they'd look at him and say "Huh? What the Hell are YOU doing with good guys like the X-Men?" and we'd get some hint of a dark part that would never go anywhere.

It got so excessive you were left wondering if they'd run into Thanos and he'd say he and Gambit went to school together as kids.

First trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Or is it just called Dark Phoenix?

Hopefully this is a decent swan song. I'll miss Mcavoy and Fassbender's versions of Xavier and Magneto (they're no Stewart and Mckellan, but they are very good), but besides that I am ready for something new with the main X-Men characters now, and hopefully Disney will bring that (even if we still have New Mutants at least before the FOX movies are over).

Looks fine but that X in a circle makes it look like a X-Files movie.

Just "Dark Phoenix" in the U.S.; "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" internationally .

My two biggest takeaways from the trailer are 1) this film proves once and for all that the post-DoFP timeline remains directly influenced by the pre-DoFP timeline, with events and scenarios essentially "echoing", and 2) despite knowing the mistakes he made in the original timeline, Charles seems 'destined'/'cursed' to mishandle Jean's powers, which is both really tragic and really neat.

The only saddening thing about the trailer is that its arrival means that we're that much closer to the end of what is currently the longest-running continuous comic-book film franchise of all time, but I'll eventually make my peace with that fact.

The mishandling clearly seems to happen in a flashback, though. He simply made the same decision based on the same information he originally had. His contact with the future Xavier doesn't come till after the die is already cast. Though there is the fact that he apparently can't bring himself to fess up and try to fix things as soon as he gets that information (then again, the trailer could be misleading on this part - maybe the whole reason Jean's powers are going out of control so much earlier is because Xavier tried to learn from his future self's mistake and change something/find a different solution for her).

You're wrong about that. Charles psychically encounters his future self in 1973 (and retains the knowledge imparted to him during that encounter even after the timeline is altered), and his first encounter with Jean in the new timeline occurs sometime between 1973 and 1983, so he absolutely mishandles dealing with her powers despite knowing what not to do.

You're right, of course. I was confusing DoFP and Apocalypse.

One would think that I'd be immune to reacting negatively to people spewing nonsense and provable falsehoods about the state of the X-Men film franchise at this point, but, sadly, I'm not.

Looks like a pretty straight remake of X-Men: The Last Stand. I'm guessing it's Erik who dies this time, in an Into Darkness-style AU fliparound.

It's not a direct remake of TLS because there are differences, but it's yet another refutation of the notion that the pre-DoFP films don't matter because there are definitely deliberate "echoes" of TLS present just as there were DoFP "echoes" present in Logan.

One would think when someone makes a simple mistake that was not aimed at any sort of negativity, but merely discussing possible plots, *and then immediately retracts said mistake* that you would simply move on with the discussion. But I guess its more important to throw out pathetic backhanded digs at people so you can maintain your precious position as the one true defender and interpreter of the fox x-men franchise.

Any truth to the rumour that this was to have been part one of a two-parter and the re-shoots were to wrap the story up in one movie ?

I actually think Mystique is going to die. If you watch the trailer closely some clues and hints are given. There is a funeral where Charles, Hank, Storm, and Cyclops are present. It is raining. Then, Charles and Hank (while in the same outfits and wet) have a conversation at a table and Hank blames Charles. Given his close relationship with Raven (Mystique) in the previous three films it makes sense that he would be angry at Charles for Mystique's death. As the de facto leader of the X-Men, her death would raise the stakes, show how big of a threat Phoenix is, and also make way for Cyclops to eventually become leader of the team.

As for the trailer, I enjoyed how it is more somber and character-driven than I thought it would be. I am assuming they will save the more action-oriented scenes for the next trailer. I also have to echo DigificWriter's sentiments and relay how sad I am this particular series is coming to an end. I distinctly still remember watching the very first X-Men in the theater in July 2000. It's crazy to think this series has been ongoing for nearly two decades. Dark Phoenix will be the twelfth film.

I'm sure there are many comic-book aficionados that are excited for what Disney and Marvel will do with the property. I am as well, but to be frank I'll miss James McAvoy as Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. These actors really inhabited their roles and their chemistry was the best part of these recent films. Whoever they get to replace these actors, including Nic Holt as Hank McCoy, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, etc., will have big shoes to fill.

"You're always sorry, Charles. And there's always a speech. And nobody cares."

Great little line that highlights the relationship between this version of Charles and Erik.

The trailer looks to be a solid conclusion to this version of the X-Men (if a bit heavy handed with The Doors' "The End") and perhaps even a proper telling of the Dark Phoenix story. Or at least a better one than last time around (granted that's not hard to do). If nothing else, it looks like Sophie Turner is going to deliver a terrific performance in the addition to the always fantastic core cast.

I wasn't talking about you, your post, or anyone or anything here. I was venting my frustration from another forum
where my factual statement about the X-Men film franchise's longevity got pooh-poohed, and should have made that clear. I apologize for any unintentional offense. The

    We don't know.

If Marvel Studios hadn't oversaturated the marketplace with formulaic films that all start to feel the same at a certain point, I might feel differently about the end of the X-Men Cinematic Universe, but it's comforting to know that I'll eventually be able to relive and revisit the franchise in its entirety whenever I want to, even if I have little interest in what's happening with the characters on the big screen in the future.

I do agree that whomever steps into these roles in the MCU is going to have some significant legacy to live up to, which is not an enviable task.
