Building the USS Enterprise in Blender 3D

A low poly "square" for the end of the warp engines, and the inner trough details, or at least, most of them!

Been continuing to watch your tutorials, and have a couple things - one is an observation, and the other is a question:

1. I didn't know that it's possible to save/name/rename materials! That's a great find for me!

2. Is it possible to open saved materials from one blend file to another one?

Thanks in advance! :)

I got this one!

2) YES! You can import a material from another .blend file. It's not import. It's File > Append. Then pick your .blend file and chose the material folder. Pick your material. Then assign that material to an object. TA DA!

Nice question and answer guys! Excellent!

I didn't even realize I had done that in the tutorial. I wasn't thinking about materials yet. Nicely done.

Hi Eric,

Ever since I noticed that you're using Alan Sinclair's schematics for this project, I've been wondering what your opinion of Gary Kerr's orthos? How would you rank them overall amongst those by Shaw, Casimiro, and Sinclair? What did he do best in your view?

If you can get Gary Kerr orthos, you're done. They are the MOST accurate you can get. Do you know where you can find any? The closest I've found (as of late) are Petri Blomqvist's orthos using Gary's measurements and description(s) of the paint job for the Enterprise, Production 11' Model, with changes made for The Trouble With Tribbles episode. Those were the last new shots of the Enterprise that they made. The entire 3rd season reused old shots of the ship.

Here's Petri's renders: http://culttvman.com/main/category/star-trek/classic-enterprise/

How do the Polar Lights decal sheets compare to those?

They are almost IDENTICAL to Gary Kerr's drawings. I keep wondering if he contributed to those. I love them!

Yep, the orthographic renders by Petri are the only ones I'm aware of. :)

So, is it okay if I post a link to a render I made using your tutorials? I certainly don't want to hijack your thread . :)

I actually ENCOURAGE you to do so! I would love to see your work!
He did. The story is that there are intentional inaccuracies. But I don't know what they are.
You should be able to compare those to the Petri Blomqvist renders and find the differences. For my money, the changes are subtle, the Engineering Hull is a little too small and the Warp Engines are changed in position, but other than that, they are spectacular!
This is still awesome stuff!
Cool! I think so too!

yeah, I mean, I do mesh ships, but in milkshape...and nowhere near as good. I am always interested in how you pros do this stuff. I try and apply things as I learn things :) So thanks!

LOL! Tallguy is good enough to be a professional. I'm just an enthusiastic home hobbyist.

Alright, but just remember that you asked for it! :) The part in question in is the rear nacelle endcap, with the globe at the end. I'm just tickled that I was able to get something done with it that looks halfway decent. The main reason that I lose confidence in Blender is I sometimes get analysis paralysis trying to decide if a problem is worth troubleshooting because I don't know if it's going to pay off in the end. Now, with your tutorials, I do know it's going to pay off. https://www.deviantart.com/irishman20/art/New-Enterprise-WIP-80-764908390?ga_submit_new=10:1537549231

I know you'll be kind. I'm thinking that I'm going to either redo the interconnecting dorsal or the shuttle bay doors next.

This has nothing to do with being kind. Your ship is looking great!

The only thing I can think of to try to help is your warp engine "square" or end stage flux thing. If you select it, enter edit mode, select all verts and then remove doubles and recalculate Outside, you'll get rid of the funky shading that's happening.

You've done VERY good work!

How does this look? https://www.deviantart.com/irishman20/art/New-Enterprise-WIP-80-765110952

I also did the same to my details on the inner nacelle trough details, and the inner pylon grills.

Bloody fantastic, sir or madam! Kai the student AND the teacher!

"I can Enterprise and so can YOU!"

I'm hitting the extremes, here. This is obviously not a "paint by numbers". Irishman, you had to do this work and you did it well! But Eric, you have solved so many of the problems that I (and you and so many others) pounded our heads into making these shapes. AND YOU JUST SPILLED IT ALL OUT THERE, MAN! You're like the Penn and Teller of Enterprise building!

If I haven't said it in this thread, I've said it elsewhere: This is one of the "lightsabers". It's one of the projects that a Jedi / 3D modeler MUST do. "Your skills are complete!" I don't think there's much in hard surface modeling that you can't figure out after you've built this baby.

You had me chuckling like a madman, Bill! You're very sweet and I appreciate the compliments and the encouragement.
