Production Order Group Viewing 2018

Finally we're back t going where no man has gone before! Unexplored space except for probes. Now, granted, the Enterprise isn't out exploring. Nothing so romantic. Instead, the Enterprise is delivering the mail. Freighter run. Resupplying Colony Beta Six.

Stardate 2124.5. Last week the Stardate was in the 3,000 range. Are we seeing these adventures out of order?

Void. Star desert. Ever since I saw FJ's tech manual with it's map of the Federation and unexplored space (as the Enterprise is in), I always concluded this star desert was the gap between 2 arms of the Milky Way spiral galaxy. So, what constitutes a star desert? No stars for how many light years?

Quadrant. By definition a quadrant is 1/4 division of a whole. A quadrant can be one quarter of a sheet of paper, a map, or a galaxy. Is the quadrant in question here the galaxy? The Enterprise's patrol area?

Interesting that nobody at first stated the planet Gothos was just floating out there in space. After all, if it's a star desert, then there are no stars. Oh wait, later in the episode they mention:
UHURA: Shall I make a full report to Spacefleet Command, sir?
KIRK: Not yet. They may trace our beam. Wait until we're well out of range.
SPOCK: Can we know his range is, Captain?
KIRK: We can take an educated guess. At the point we entered their solar system.

So is there a star or not? A solar system has a star. Maybe this was an oasis in the star desert? Funny they didn't mention anything about the oasis in the opening teaser. Would have been a great place to mention a star. Trelane only states he made the planet/could have the planet to play with. Nobody said anything about the star being artificial. Or existing.

Interesting that Sulu stands up before being transported. Also interesting that Kirk moves to where Sulu was standing before being transported. Trelane's beam must be focused on that specific spot.

Speaking of Trelane's technological methods... His parents seem to be non-corporeal entities. They seem to have powers without the need of technology. Even after Trelane's mirror is destroyed, Trelane continues to exhibit powers. Trelane is a child. Maybe his gadgets are like a baby's walker or a step-stool. Technological tools to aid someone not old enough to use his own natural innate abilities.

On a superficial level I understand the fanwank desire to connect Trelane to Q. But it's obvious with a little thought that he's totally different.

As noted above, the utility belts, breathing mask, and the laser beacon are nice gadgets. Reminds me of the backpacks with equipment used in The Cage. It's a great idea to have these landing parties equipped with gear needed for exploration.

I really don't think Jaeger was manning Sulu's helm station so much as the chair was unoccupied. Interesting we're having this meeting on the bridge. In typical TNG fashion this would have been in the conference room.

A castle never bodes well on Star Trek. Remember Pike with the fortress on Rigel 2.

The star desert and Gothos is 900 light years from Earth. Trelane was spying on Earth from 9 centuries earlier. Trelane was specifically watching the Napoleonic era and even mentioned that guy from the musical, Alexander Hamilton who died in 1804. This puts Star Trek in the 2700s or the 28th Century.

Trelane's German and the translation (from Google)

TRELANE: Und Offizier Jaeger, und der deutsche Soldat, nein? (gives a little Prussian salute then marches around) Eins, zwei, drei, vier. Gehen vir mit dem Schiessgewehr.

And officer Jaeger, and the German soldier, no? One two three four. Go vir with the gun.

TRELANE: Imprisoned? Nonsense. You're my guests. You see, I just finished my studies of your curious and fascinating society. You came by at the most propitious moment. I want to know all about your campaigns, your battles, your missions of conquest.
KIRK: Our missions are peaceful, not for conquest. When we do battle, it is only because we have no choice.

The Klingons and Romulans might disagree. Can't win a war without offensive actions. Kirk will later describe himself as a soldier and not a diplomat. We've already seen that Earth and Romulans have waged war. Vulcan was conquered (by whom we really don't know). Of course, we've not seen the Klingons yet so I don't know what I'm talking about.

TRELANE: I wouldn't hear of it. You shall join me in a repast. I want to learn all about your feelings on war and killing and conquest. That sort of thing. Do you know that you're one of the few predator species that preys even on itself?
Except for all the other intelligent/sapient/sentient/sophont species depicted on Star Trek. Vulcans especially preyed upon themselves which led to the Romulan exodus. One of those exceptions to Vulcans not being prdators, no doubt.

All of Trelane's creations are form without substance. No taste. No flavor. No heat from the flame. Maybe this is typical from a non corporeal being that has never experienced physical reality. Never had to live in physical form and eat food and be warmed by fire. On the other hand, fire is a chemical process that is known to give heat. At the very least Trelane should have understood fire.

The comm beep is a transporter signal? Haven't we heard it as a ring tone? Maybe there was some display on the communicator, like a push notification, that stated transporter signal.

I like Yeoman Ross. I don't see her vacuous at all. In fact, I thought her request to change was a little witty. Not her words but the delivery. Speaking of our yeoman of the week, I never gave much thought until this rewatch that Rand was supposed to be all these yeoman. That definitely would have fit the promotion material that featured her so prominently if she was this week after week recurring character. I think it's a little more realistic that we've seen various yeomen.

Props again to Kirk to keeping things professional in his interaction with Ross.

Interesting when Trelane transports everyone back to Gothos that those who were seated on the bridge are seated in the drawing room.

First in "Corbomite Maneuver" and now in "Squire of Gothos" we see Kirk doing 'what he had to do. What he always did. Turn death into a fighting chance to live.' Not chess, but poker. Heck, even when Kirk plays chess he plays "most illogically." To me, this is Kirk at his best and the captain I would follow through Hell and back. Kirk's confidence, swagger and his ability to pull anything out of his butt and turn it into victory.

No change to the love meters this week. We still have (now in production order!)
Kirk Love Meter
Little Blonde Lab Technician
Jancie Rand
Evie
Andrea (forgot her last time)
Helen Noel
Miri (In the line of duty)
Lenore Karidian (In the line of duty)
Lieutenant Helen Johansson
Areel Shaw
Ruth

McCoy Love Meter
Nancy Crater
Yeoman Tonia Barrows

The Squire of Gothos

Introducing the Navigator of the Week: Desalle!

It's funny to see them all hanging out on the bridge drinking. Coffee I assume unless someone broke out the Romulan ale.

Spock: "I am responsible for your safety." He remembers the whole trip to Taurus II I think.

Spock's a little shouty when Kirk and Sulu disappear. Ah, like old times.

Interesting landing party. McCoy is the only one of the big three in the party. So McCoy is the ranking officer, is he in command of the landing party? Or is it Desalle since he seems to be in the command track?

Yeager describes a very hostile environment on the planet's surface and they beam down with little masks? I would think they'd go in full space suits. Actually, we don't know they have full space suits, do we?

It's talked about a lot, but it is fun to see the salt monster. So I guess Trelaine created it rather than it being a real salt monster? So how did he know about them?

All the inhabited worlds in the galaxy, I wonder why he picked Earth to fall in love with.

Wouldn't the universal translator let them all understand French or German?

Kirk is so badass. Trelaine demonstrates superior power throughout the episode, and Kirk is just not impressed.

William Campbell had a great time playing Trelaine.

"You will hang by the neck, Captain, until you are dead dead dead." This is one of the lines of Star Trek that stuck with me as a kid.

Trelaine should do a rap with Lazarus.

Lazarus: Kill! Kill! Kill!

Trelaine: Dead dead dead!

Lazarus: Kill! Kill! Kill!

Trelaine: Dead dead dead!

Someone should edit those together. Or maybe it should be done as a Death Metal song sung by Cookie Monster. ;)

Like with Charlie, the parents have to show up and spoil all the fun. Charlie and Trelaine should do a rap.

Charlie: I want to stay stay stay

Trelaine: I would've I would've I would've

Charlie: Stay stay stay

Trelaine: I would've I would've I would've

Trelaine's parents are really polite.

Alien Watch! New aliens! But do we know what Trelaine and his parents are called?

Talosians
That big ugly Rigellian guy Pike fought in illusion
Vina as an Orion girl in illusion
Glimpse of other aliens captured by Talosians
Ron Howard's brother
That dog from Enemy Within
Salt monster
That hand plant...Gertrude
Spock (duh)
Charlie's parents (Thasians)*
Romulans!
(Ruk)
Miri's planet kids (bonk bonk)
Giant ape creatures of Taurus II
Shore Leave Caretaker guy
Trelaine and his folks*

Any appearance of Vina in which she wasn't deformed as finally revealed was an illusion. In other words, pretty much all of them.

Yeah when I say Ross is vacuous I suppose I mean she's a pretty sack of spuds. She's there but does nothing useful. Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Desalle all show enquiring minds trying to puzzle what's going on. Ross just smiles and dances and fails to see through Kirk's obvious ploy. Considering how chatty women can be, Ross could have pumped him for information while they were one on one.

I had the same issue with Rand in Miri.

Noel was at least enquiring.

Did she though? Or did she play her "assigned" role and distract Trelane?

Granted, we didn't see her pry information from Trelane, but I can overlook that.

The question is was Vina physically present in all her deformity but the Talosians were making her look perfectly healthy and beautiful or was Vina not physically there at all and the Talosians only made illusions of Vina being there while she was really back in her cell. Given the nature of the Talosians' powers, either is entirely possible.

I should say a word about Shatner's acting in SoG because it's good. When Kirk is lined up for the duel with Trelaine and Trelaine shoots the ceiling, Shatner's face perfectly shows the intense fear of one who thinks he's about to die, and then his face shifts to the intense relief knowing that he's not going to die.

Then, Kirk and Trelaine are negotiating the hunt, Kirk turns his back to Trelaine and when Trelaine asks if he agrees Kirk says yes but the look on his face is back to intense reluctance, fear, and worry. It's good stuff from Shatner.

I'm baffled that anyone doesn't like Teresa Ross. I thought she was terrific.

All those men are officers. So Uhura should be in there speculating. Ross's job and perhaps the other yeomen's jobs are to follow orders like the male redshirts do.

Yes, it is true that the security guards who are not officers (and most of the ones who are officers) are also really dumb. I suppose it's frustrating because so far in season one, most of the women have been yeomen and Uhura tends to ask questions rather than speculate. There were glimmers of speculation from Rand in Man Trap, Charlie X, and Miri. Perhaps if she had stayed, they would have left a few more lines with the yeomen.

If your name isn't in the opening credits, "dumb" was usually the default. ;)

I'm smiling about this Playboy cover. Apparently an unhooked bikini top is what was provocative in the 60's. How quaint. :)

I think it's a spectacular cover. The only trouble with it is, Venita Wolf appeared only on the cover, which borders on false advertising.

Arena

One of my favorites!

They couldn't tell from orbit that the base was destroyed, there were aliens on the planet, there was an alien ship in the area? How do sensors work, anyway? Or didn't they do any scans since the planet was supposed to be friendly?

In Star Trek VI we have that ridiculous scene where our heroes are paging through English to Klingon dictionaries to reply to the Klingons because the Klingons would know if you respond with a universal translator. So how was the Enterprise fooled by the Gorns? Is there a Gorn who speaks fluent English? How do the Gorns know what Commodore Whatshisface sounds like? Maybe they intercepted the base's signals for a long time before the attack and heard what he sounds like?

It's really pretty nuts to be running around with charges going off all around them, and some of those explosions are close enough to kill them really.

Same logic as BoT, stop the attackers before they make it home, though Spock objects to killing them later.

"I'm delighted, Mr. Spock." Don't have to be a dick about it, Jim.

Didn't realize Warp 7 was so dangerous.

Is this the first time we see photon torpedoes?

Too bad we never get to see the Gorn ship.

Oh that first surprise glimpse of the Gorn and the Gorn throughout the rest of the episode really scared me as a kid. I loved it!

We get such awesome Kirk Fu in this fight.

McCoy on the verge of being a dick himself as he is wont to do. "What are we going to do, Mr. Spock? Huh huh huh?" SMACK

I like the Gorn laughing to himself as he sets his trap.

"We are the Metrons." We are Devo.

How would you know just by looking that a white powder is potassium nitrate?

Is the Gorn's voice Ted Cassidy?

Great example of Kirk using only as much force as necessary to stop his opponent but not killing him. Classic Kirk demonstration of mercy. One of Kirk's best qualities.

How long would it take to go 500 parsecs at Warp 1. Sounds slow to me.

So I suppose the Federation and the Gorns engage in diplomatic dialog now?

So the Gorn captain is zapped back to his bridge whereupon his crew kill him because losing is a sign of weakness that cannot be tolerated.

Oh, I loved this episode. Fun fun. And new aliens! And one of them joins the Omipotent Aliens sublist!

Okay, here's my own calculation. Wiki says a parsec is 3.26 light years so 500 parsecs times 3.26 is 1630 light years. Warp 1 is the speed of light, so it's going to take 1630 years to get back. Hmmm, I hope they brought some Snickers, they're not going anywhere for a while.
