ST, the Undiscovered Country, redeux. Complete with John Ford Klingons

Re: ST, the Undiscovered Country, redeux. Complete with John Ford Klin

So, I take it there was no Whale Probe, or did all that take place "off screen?"

:)

No, in this story the Whale Probe (and therefore ST IV and V) never happen. Kirk and co. have to 'face the music' for stealing the Enterprise. If you read the introduction, I explain the changed premises and altered cusp event (no whale probe) that form the basis of this story.

The first few chapters happen right after STIII; the rest happens 8 years later and is centered around a moderately altered version of ST VI.

One nice little side effect (for me, anyway) when I wrote this story was how I handled the registry number deal. There is no Enterprise A, only a new, Excelsior Class Enterprise. (Not the B) I always appreciated Scotty's line in Relics: "No bloody A, B, C, or D!"

Thanks for all the kind words, BTW, guys and gals!

Just finished a re-read of Ford's original "The Final Reflection." Made me think of this. One of these days I need to go back and do a couple minor revisions to this story.

Damn, I really miss the Ford/Morwood interpretation of the Klingons (the dunder-headed, chest thumping "honor" gluttons post-TNG really do nothing for me...). Peter Morwood's "Rules of Engagement" was and remains one of my favorite Trek novels of all time, and this piece here feels so much like a worthy sequel that the man could have written it himself... Unfortunately can't say the same for Ford as I never managed to get a copy of "Final Reflection" (though I loved "HMFJTP"!)

Did you ever get around to doing that updated version you mentioned? (And do you have a .pdf version? :D )

You have done me a total solid. I wasn't aware of Morwood's book, or that he used Ford-style Klingons. After reading this I went straight to Amazon and bought it for my kindle. I am waaay looking forward to reading this. I thought I had read the vast majority of those old-school Trek books, and somehow I missed this one. With TFR as my favorite, no less!!

Not yet on the updated version- actually, at this point it wouldn't be much of an update; more like a tweaking. I'll have to scour my backup files to see if there's a PDF still floating around, if you're still interested. PM me an email address.

Glad I could help! That novel remains one of my favorites from the good old days of the quality TOS/Movie era series - something your story has made me long for once again... Will PM shortly :)

Heh: LT. Harb Tanzer: that brought back some memories as soon as I read it; there was a continuity to those old novels lacking in later works. His was a character that spanned authors, not just stories.

Kudos on an exceptionally well -written, creative, and entertaining re-imagining of The Undiscovered Country. I always liked John Ford's take on the Klingons and your use thereof really added an interesting dimension to the story. Well done!

Mucho gracias!
