Series 11 News & Spoilers

Is their a difference though between BBC and BBC America were I watched the show. I also wonder if the fact that I think the show must place more importance on expanding it's brand in other countries impacts how it does things. I think I recall hearing in the past that the show was putting to much importance on trying to win over a American audience by some fans. We do see these days how tv and movies do put more importance on international audiences than they did in the past but I don't know if that is more of a Hollywood thing or something common everywhere. Also how does it do in China? That seems to be the untapped market everyone is going after these days at least with movies and I know Disney is proably frustrated that "Star Wars" never sales over there for reasons I don't understand.
The BBC in the UK and BBC America are pretty much separate corporations. BBC America is a commercial and subscription-supported channel. It does now co-produce DW so I guess it does have a say though.

Re Star Wars, the Chinese censors removed all references to the Force from the original trilogy, I believe. They also place quite severe limits on the amount of foreign-originated TV and cinema that can be shown in China.

I sometimes jokingly refer to BBC America as "AMC 2" to my friends. Although the BBC is the majority owner of BBC America by a ridiculously thin margin (less than 0.2% or something like that), it's basically an American channel operating out of New York.

I must say, I actually love Calpadi’s Doctor! Was skeptical initially, but he grew on me, and over time he’s become one of my favs!

Also, looking very forward to Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor! :) huzzah!

Teaser!
Breaking the glass ceiling and female empowerment song. I don't think they were subtle enough ;)
Seems a shame, they had a chance to introduce the new take on the character but just focused on the gender aspect instead.

As for the move to sundays it doesn't trouble me but I think kids would enjoy it more on Saturdays since they don't have school the next day. You don't have to worry about going to bed after or during if it's an extended episode.

Yeah, and it could have been a good trailer as is. If they found a better music choice than the, uh, interesting one they ultimately went with.

My only problem with the music is I'm pretty sure ABC used it a year or two ago, so it had a Been Used quality to the music choice.

Having a Doctor Who trailer with shitty pop music just didn't work. Hopefully we'll get a actual trailer closer to the premiere.

Meh. We've had Doctor Who episodes with "shitty" pop music.

It is sort of the elephant in the room, isn't it? And it has a lot of people excited. So why not lean into it?
Fair enough. When it comes to Sci-fi I like to think that alien cultures and future societies represent a time when such things are the norm. News and media has already promoted the fact that the Doctor is now female and the first (supposedly) female Doctor.

I think you also got to assume not everyone even knows the new Doctor is going to be a female so to some I assume that add sells as a new twist they didn't expect. Not everyone follows nerd news and is up to date on this stuff. They could have added the Tardis sound effect though or maybe the Tardis breaks through the glass ceiling and we see her inside.

Sci fi may portray aliens and future societies, but the stories are a relfection of the present.

I think this is the perfect summation of the new Regime:

So, you can come to the Premiere but you can only stand outside because you can't be trusted to keep your mouth shut. You darn kids and your internets.

Some of the marketing moves they've made (like the Entertainment Weekly photos; anything that punctures the self-importance of the Cardiff media-industrial complex is a good thing, imho) have been good. Some have been bad. I think I might call this one weird, because it's so pointless. Of course, my perception is skewed; while I can't imagine spending my time watching people on a red carpet, and that's all that I do, there are people who would enjoy the hell out of that.

Chibnall has two competing drives, and I'll be curious to see, over the next month, how he squares them. On the one hand, he wants the new series and the new Doctor to be a complete surprise. On the other hand, Doctor Who has been, in its home country, a series in decline for the last five years, and he needs to get an audience to tune in, and that means more trailers, more media appearances, spoiler-filled reviews before the premiere, anything to get people to want to tune in.

That's why the teasers lacking any real Doctor Who content seems surprising. No sneak peeks at the monsters or any funny scenes or anything. Maybe they will show more as it gets closer to airdate.

I'll be amazed if there isn't at least one more trailer, if not more, before we go live. I get what Chibnall and the Beeb are trying to do, but you can swing too far the other way. At the end of the day, and in different ways, both RTD and Moffat are showmen, I'm not sure Chibnall. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it is a thing. Those last two weeks before episode 1 we have to get more trailers/spots.

Someone sent me a link to the premiere thing, it is weird, we want fans to be there, BUT YOU CAN'T WATCH THE EPISODE. I am impressed how much they've kept under wraps, but this does seem like a case of trying to have your cake and eat it, involve the fans but also lock them out of the process. Could be a stroke of brilliance, but could also be dangerous.

Remeber when? Back in the 80's, during the original run, there were no spoilers/trailers/teasers?

We were lucky if Starlog had any info about future DW series'.

I'm an unabashed spoiler whore, but I really miss those days.

While I don't want too much spoiling about the upcoming season, I do like a bit of an idea about it. The trailers I loved were the ones that showed very quick clips of most of the episodes. They were way to brief to really know what was going on but it was fun see the freeze-frame analysis of who/what was in each frame! You got a bit of a sense of who/what was going to show up in the next season but really didn't give a lot away. Seemed like a perfect balance between getting fans excited but yet keeping the surprises.

Right now it does seem to be going towards too much secrecy. But, who knows, maybe another trailer will drop soon. I mean, surprises are nice but if no one is watching, no one will see those surprises and actually be surprised! This is particularly true for a series with dropping ratings. They should be coming up with a plan to counter that and I doubt releasing virtually no information is a part of that plan!
