Donny’s Late TOS Movie Era Interiors

That photo with Shatner on the bridge looks like a scene from that horribly awkward and il-conceived promotional bit announcing the new movie (TFF) that he and Harve Bennett did for the press. IIRC, the cast members clearly looked less than thrilled to be there in costume after filming had wrapped.

Well, I for one am glad they had that shindig, because it has provided me with the best reference I could find featuring the ceiling structure

Note that the ceiling structure was rotated 45 degrees for it's appearance in TUC, compared to its appearance in TFF.

It's true you don't often get a good view of the bridge ceiling like that. It is an excellent reference.

Reminds me of that one POV shot from the inside of the turbolift in TOS (I think it was an early episode) that showed the ceiling wall of that bridge. Almost looked like it went straight up, as opposed to curving in. Of course, it's been years since I saw that view, so my memory might be failing me.

Your memory is just fine.

That's the one! :techman: The ceiling both curved in AND went straight up. Always liked the different angles they tried to film back then - experimenting with different points of view.

I was wrong about one thing though, it wasn't an early episode. It's at least season 2. Chekov is at the Nav station and Spock's scanner is light gray, as opposed to the early black. In fact, it may even be season 3. Kirk seems to be wearing his girdle and it looks like he's got the extra-bushy sideburns. :D

Definitely season 3: "Is There in Truth No Beauty?"
Side note: I love the season 3 uniforms.

Wow...forgot about that one. The ceiling looks like it was made out of comstruction paper! At least the later one looked like it was intended to be a viable part of the structure. Thanks to all for the pics! :)

I never saw those shots of the TFF bridge before. The ceiling just needs a dome in the middle!

I imagine they abandoned the TMP-TVH bridge ceiling structure because of how hard that bridge was to light with that structure up there. In "The Making of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", Nick Meyer complains a good bit about how difficult it was for the lighting crew to drop lights down through the various arms of the stucture and how it significantly added time to simple lighting changes. I imagine Robert Wise had similar problems.
But all those ribs were removable. The solid section with the dome was suspended from the catwalks, so if you didn't angles where the ceiling ribs would be visible, you could yank them all out.
