The Captain is dead, long live the Captain.

So I recently read that the network suggested killing Archer at the end of Season 3, Braga was against it but Coto could have been swayed, given they accepted the Temporal Cold War, what do you think would/should have happened?
Rank everyone up, T'Pol becomes captain, the series gets an upsurge in views, based solely on a catsuited captain?
Or a whole new captain; younger, more exciting like the network wanted, the dynamic captain is woefully misjudged, getting the show cancelled even quicker?
Who would you have cast as this vibrant Captain Freshface in 2005, provide an actor and character synopsis?

Captain Ramirez of Intrepid might have been the logical choice, unless Captain Hernandez was bumped from Columbia to Enterprise.

Either Josh Cruze or Ada Maris would have been up to the task, I think. I'm not an Archer fan. Killing off Archer and giving the role to either of them might have shaken things up just a bit to get a few more extra viewers to Enterprise and save it.

I wouldn't have minded if Archer had been killed off, he was a bit of a bumbling fool, IMO. Ben Browder could've been brought in as the mentioned but never seen Captain Gardner (they could've snapped him up before he went on to SG-1), or Captain Alex Chase played by the likes of Melinda Clarke or Dina Meyer, or maybe a Captain of Middle Eastern origin.

Archer was an awful captain, he came off as incompetent, arrogant and a bit stupid. Killing him would have improved the series but it should have happened way earlier. The end of season 3 was too late, I doubt it would have revived interest in the show at that point.

A Vulcan observer/desserter as captain of Earth's first and foremost exploration ship? I can't see that quite working. Make Trip captain, have Lorien fall through a temporal bubble or resurrect JG Robinson somehow. Or promote Trip!!

I was never a fan of Archer. Bakula just seemed awkward and incredibly bland, at least until he went off the deep end in season 3. He was from New York, had a dog, went to flight school and then was handed the keys to the Enterprise because his father built the engine and their plan A guy killed himself. That's literally it.

Have a prodigious Starfleet Academy cadet save the planet and be rewarded by being bumped up to Captain and given command of the Enterprise.

Isn't that pretty much what happened? What did Archer command before Enterprise? Or even serve on? Seems like he was just a test pilot who went to flight school and nothing else.

Famous daddies take you far in Starfleet.

He was a Commander in the NX Program.

It might have helped in the ratings. Bring in a big enough star that makes people tune in. Someone who is more of a soldier type that lend him or herself out more to pure action stories.

MeToo! I never saw him as bumbling, awkward, or a fool. At worst, he was idealistic and a bit naive. He led by inspiration, enthusiasm and loyalty. I thought he was structured as the personification of humans reaching out into space with a sense of exploration and adventure, getting a very firm reality check and having to adapt quickly or die.
