Sorry for the delay. In recognition of the new school year, this week's contest is devoted to teachers: the best teachers from TV and film. the good teachers, the smart teachers, the funny ones who made a difference. The emphasis here is on GOOD teachers (Mr. Hand is not eligible): Mr. Feeny, Mr. Cooper, Mr. Miyagi, Our Miss Brooks, Miss Bliss, Christy, Lydia Grant, Prof. Kingsfield of the Paper Chase, Miss Beadle, etc. To make it just a bit more difficult, no scifi or fantasy allowed.

Standard av rules apply: 200 x 200 pixels max and 1 MB max, and work-safe. The poll will go up on next Thursday, the 6th. You may enter up to two entries per person.

Here's mine:
Mr. Keating, Dead Poet's Society

(here's where I show my age)
Mr. Kotter, Welcome Back, Kotter

- Mr. Bergstrom, The Simpsons

I'm never quite sure which side of the SF&F divide The Simpsons falls on, since I know some episodes have more fantastical elements. This one was pretty grounded, IIRC. But if it doesn't qualify, just let me know.

And I'll also try for a second entry... as soon as I can actually think of someone. :alienblush:

Does this qualify?

- John Nash, A Beautiful Mind

I'm just wondering because first, the character is based on a real person, and second, because TBH, it's been a long time since I've seen the movie, and I can't actually remember if the film depicted him as a *good* teacher or not. I know he was a genius, but one does not necessary lead directly to the other. :)

^ did he actually teach a class? I know he gave just a few lectures in his life but I don't recall if he ever taught a regular class. If he did, at least in the movie, then yeah, that's fine.

Or...I don't really recall, did he sort of tutor people in the movie? That would work, too.

It's been ages since I've seen it (and my memory isn't the greatest anyway ;) ), but when I thought about him as an option I did a little investigating just to try to make sure the movie actually showed him teaching. The Wikipedia article mentioned:

Wikipedia said:
For the scene where Nash has to teach a calculus class and gives them a complicated problem to keep them busy

And I did find an image with him with a student in frame. (I didn't use it because it didn't seem a good choice to have the character facing away! ;)

But that's all I've got. If you don't think it qualifies, I can withdraw it, and no worries, since I don't even know myself!
