Commodore Mendez’s Secretary

I am, of course, referring to the woman who stands at attention as Mendez and the Enterprise landing party pass in front of her desk in “The Menagerie.” She’s not listed in the credits for the episode, and Memory Alpha has no information about her other than that she (apparently) performs various administrative duties for Mendez on Starbase 11, but I’m wondering if she’s actually stunt coordinator Carol Daniels Dement, who appeared in at least one other episode (“The Savage Curtain”). I say that because Carol Daniels often served as a stunt double for actresses who look like the woman in question.

I doubt it's her. The receptionist looks more like an aspiring actress than a woman who decided she'd have a better shot in stunt work.

Zora. Some of Dement’s facial features are similar to those of the unidentified lieutenant, but it’s hard to make a good comparison of the two because of the Zora makeup.

Would Fred Phillips have given Zora such a lifelike fake nose appliance when it wasn't even necessary? Phillips had to get help from another studio (was it Disney or Fox?) just to make Nimoy's ears! I have to conclude that was Daniels' real nose as Zora, and the girl at Reception on Starbase 11 is a very pretty young actress, not a stuntwoman.

Gotcha, thanks. I . . . see absolutely no resemblance in face or figure between the young goldshirt woman and Zora.

Can't say I've ever noticed her before! What's wrong with me? On another note are there any photos of Carol Daniels Dement without her Zora make-up anywhere?

She is only listed as a stand-in with no name on the production reports for that day.

I love that picture of the planet on the wall. Now I want a print of that.

I love that picture of the planet on the wall. Now I want a print of that.

That planet artwork comes from a time before anybody knew what Jupiter really looked like. The best observatory photos were blurry as hell, thanks to the Earth's atmosphere, but you could make out wide bands that ran across the planet like stripes, and of course the larger moons were known. It wasn't until Pioneer 10 flew by Jupiter in 1973 that we got a somewhat sharper look at it.

So I think that painting represents somebody's best guess as to what an alien gas giant might look like if you could go there and see it. It was still a dream in 1967 to see anything beyond the Earth and the moon with great clarity.

Also, I vaguely recall some conversations about the paintings in Kirk's quarters...

...to the effect that they were not done by Star Trek's art department, but by a space artist who came in and offered them to the show. Can anybody else remember that?

^Oh, okay. If the woman next to the girl is Daniels Dement, then she’s definitely not the young lieutenant outside Mendez’s office. Someone has to know her name.

Maybe Shatner knows who she is. She’s cute, so Kirk probably made a move off-screen.
