What would you do if you found a bag filled with a Million Dollars?

Yes this is more or less the plot of "A Simple Plan" only now it's your turn. Would you keep it? I would like to say I would turn it but who are we kidding. Of course I would keep it. Once you do the research and find out this money wasn't stolen from innocent people or anything like that. I know I would want to do something positive like donate it to people who help people with mental illness and keep just enough to make sure my mom and families utilities were taken care of each year and maybe buy the most expensive life insurance. I have no interest in fancy cars or big houses or anything like that. Granted with the basics out of the way I guess I could buy a few extra things like Blu-Rays and whatnot and maybe vacation once a year but nothing special.

It depends on how I found it. Under certain conditions, anything you did, including informing the police, might get you murdered, if it's traceable to you. Without knowing exactly what I'm into, I most likely just ignore it & walk the hell away.

I understand the logic of leaving it alone but I think if you are really in that position, especially if you have money problems I think it would be enough to seduce anyone. That was kind of how it went down in the movie. I also wonder if it would go down easier if you don't have a Billy Bob Thorton or the other guy in the mix as well kind of screwing things up for you. The money being traced though by the government like in the movie is something I would really consider because I would assume this money was procured by criminals like in the movie. Only thing I can think would to maybe spend 100 hundred dollars. in the same place. in maybe a few states over and then wait a year. If cops come to invesitgate then it means the money is traceable. If not it's clean coast. Of course I know everyone thinks they got the perfect way around the issue and you always get caught in the end unless your like a career criminal but money can make you stupid.

Jason

I would probably give it to the police.

What if the criminals don't know how much money was in the bag and they see this story and they think you only gave them a little of it and they come after you?

Jason

I'd hand it over to the police and notify the lost property office (that's the law over here. By keeping any of it I'd commit theft at a huge scale and that'd get me into prison for half a decade or possibly even more)

I'd hand it over to the police. It's way too big of an amount that I could ever be comfortable keeping and not spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder assuming someone was going to come for it eventually.

....I might take some out on the way to the police station though to buy a drink :P Doing good deeds is thirsty work!

I was under the impression that the law in regards to found money was, finders keepers, losers, weepers. That is if their is no way to prove who owned the money like finding it in someones wallet.

Just remember that was what Bill Paxton and his wife and friends thought they also would do at first! Keeping and regretting though would no doubt be very likely in most cases.

I think after a certain time, if no one claims it, you can keep it.

I've always wonder how that works. You would think people would be coming out of the woodwork claiming the money is theirs. How do you verfiy that if they say they have been hiding it under their bed for years or don't do business with a bank?

That's easier than you might think: they need to describe the notes (folded/crumpled/unfolded/ironed), if possible list their numbers and values, at any rate name the exact sum, describe the bag or box in which it was, and their fingerprints and DNA must be all over the money.
In case of a co worker of mine you could simply smell if it was her money - she uses a terribly obtrusive perfum (a mix of patchouli and musk) that keeps us healthy... because we keep the windows open all day.

You're looking for reasons to not do the right thing, then. I turn it in. It isn't mine.

If someone is seduced into taking the money, as you suggest, it is likely they'll be seduced by spending it, in ways that might get attention. They don't even have to be obscene spending practices to get attention

I would think fear of imprisonment or being murdered might be just as strong a motivator. No one just walks away from a sack with their million(s) in it. They are going to want it back, & will do anything. Even if it's surrounded in dead people, there's a strong possibility there are more involved, who aren't just couriers.

Even in a case like Llewelyn Moss from No Country For Old Men, assuming he didn't make the terrible mistakes of returning to the scene (duh) & not searching the satchel for tracking devices, those people still come to investigate, search. They stay a while & sniff around. Maybe a long time, & anyone they see, who even lives near the area it was lost, is going to be suspect. If the local cops know what his truck looks like & people know he goes out there to hunt, that information can be sussed out

If I lost millions of dollars, I'd be moving into town where ever it went missing, & spend a good amount of money to watch everything that goes on there. You are literally a wanted man, if you take it
