On the positive side, it will be even easier to accept STD as a separate universe if Speck feels way off and you're doing mental gymnastics to make him fit into TOS, like most things on Discovery. I still can't believe the Shroom Drive idea actually made it to screen :/

Whether one thinks Discovery fits overall with the Prime universe or not, the worst thing they can do is have Peck mimic Nimoy.

Discovery is its own show. It has to sink or swim in 2018, not 1966.

That's pretty much the route D.C. Fontana took in her prequel novel, VULCAN'S GLORY. Without getting too spoilery, a heart-breaking tragedy causes the young Spock we saw in "The Cage" to become the much more reserved character we saw on TOS . . . . .
 
I also saw explanations put forth in novels that he thought behaving more like humans may help his interactions with his shipmates, something he later learned was foolhardy.
 
I honestly love that every comic or novel about Pike and Spock either shows us how Pike learns of his later injuries or how Spock got from "THE WOMEN" to logic.

Problem being, we've already watched a variation of young Spock suffer massive loss...

For me, the Abrams films will really color my perception of this version of Spock. Coming so soon, and while the other Spock is still part of the feature film franchise.

They will have to really have an impressive story for this to seem like anything more than a pale imitation of other recent material.

I agree to a point. For instance I always thought Tim Russ was a bit to stilted when he played Tuvok, I think he was trying to channel Nimoy. Nimoy (and even Mark Lenard) had a unique way of playing stoic naturally.

Frankly my favorite Tuvok moments were when he would lose his control. I still remember the one scene where they have him in a forcefield in sickbay where he looks at Janeway dangerously and says "Lower the Forcefield". That gave me the creeps. Russ did play murderously quiet anger well.

But I'd look to Karl Urban's portrayal of McCoy as a good example of a method to follow. I thought he did an excellent job chanelling DeForest Kelley without mimicking him. I thought he balanced that well.

I thought Quinto had the Spock vibe years before he was cast in Star Trek 09! In fact it was during Heroes! As for this Ethan Peck guy, nope! He may be dark and sort of lean but will they give him the dreaded V forehead which has been predominant during TNG, DS9, VOY and the rest? All Romulans and Vulcans apart from Nimoy and Mark Lenard have been forced to wear it since the original series sadly enough!

For what it's worth, I'm sorry you felt bad about that exchange. You should definitely feel free to speak up and express your opinions. I confess that I sometimes forget that there are are real people behind these all these semi-anonymous voices on the internet, and that not everybody enjoys a fun, vigorous debate or has a sarcastic sense of humor.

I've spent thirty-plus years having fun arguing about STAR TREK, sometimes on stage, so I'm accustomed to spirited, no-hold-barred debates. Get me, Dave Mack, Keith DeCandido, and Peter David on a panel somewhere, or hanging out at a bar at Shore Leave, and, trust me, we'll have a ball arguing with each other. And there will be no hard feelings afterwards, because, hey, we're all Trekkies here and we're just having fun.

In short, nothing personal. I was trying to skewer your arguments, not you as a person, and was mostly just objecting to the idea that "divisive" is something to be avoided at all costs. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about something you post on the internet.

Since Sarek doesn't have it, I don't think we have to worry about Spock.

I honestly can't remember. "Gambit" is one of those episodes I haven't revisited in twenty years, and plan on spending the next twenty years ignoring. :lol:

We're obviously all passionate about Star Trek. I think it is sometimes easy to get lost in the argument.

Though I wouldn't know anything about that... :shifty:

She was a Vulcan who wanted to bring back the "old" ways. It was rather confusing though.
 
TALLERA: That is correct. I infiltrated this ship a year ago posing as a Romulan mercenary. I'm here to investigate a possible threat to Vulcan.

She was lying that she was working for intelligence, but still.
We have never seen any Vulcans, except her, have the forehead ridge.
