You don't recall correctly. National Amusements has a controlling stake in both CBS and Paramount, enough for them to push for a remerger, but they trade as seperate competing companies with different sets of shareholders. If CBS wanted the movie rights, they would have to make a deal for them, unless Viacom accepts their buyout offer.I don't think that's how it works. CBS and Paramount are both owned by National Amusements, IIRC.

There's no development hell. There's a dispute on wages.Let's be honest, Viacom does come off as a jilted ex living off spousal support.
With the movies back in development hell again, should CBS just make a play for the movie rights?
Would the fans be here for it?
Not how either of these businesses work. Like famously so, given how neither are merged yet. You silly billy. And if National Amusements wants Paramount to have the movie rights, then Paramount keeps the movie rights.
I think CBS is buying the studio space DSC films in, so they have the resources to produce a film themselves. They could then arrange for any of the studios, even Paramount, to distribute it.CBS would only really need to go after Trek movie rights if they intend to make the movies themselves. CBS does have a movie division, but it's nothing really to right home about (a half-dozen or so sporadic medium-budget movies) and doesn't seem even remotely set up to do anything big budget, IMO.
I think a better question is what movie studio would want to outbid Paramount to make Star Trek movies?
That's a better question. If its know that the film rights to Star Trek are up then that could drive up the price due to interest.I think a better question is what movie studio would want to outbid Paramount to make Star Trek movies?
I would think they're setting up the infrastructure they'll need for their 4 live-action and one animated Trek series'.I think CBS is buying the studio space DSC films in, so they have the resources to produce a film themselves. They also filmed another CBS series there, In The Dark.I would think they're setting up the infrastructure they'll need for their 4 live-action and one animated Trek series'.
Actually they don't. Movies and TV are different businesses with different monies involved. Rick Berman made it look easy in the '90s, but those days are gone. CBS' movie division is--to put it simply--a rather pitiful outfit. It operates on a shoestring budget, has only five employees, and they do more acquiring of already-produced movies than produce movies themselves. IMO, CBS really isn't that terribly interested in making movies, but they do have their foot in the door (as long as it doesn't cost them a whole lot).I think CBS is buying the studio space DSC films in, so they have the resources to produce a film themselves.
Also, I meant more they have a movie studio and crew to physically film with. The crew that makes Discovery would be able to do a movie. Above the line there are differences between DSC and a JJ movie, but below the line?Actually they don't.
