Ethan Peck cast as DSC's Spock

It slightly irks me that they announce his casting but don't also include a promo photo of him as Spock. Surely he's filmed some scenes by now. Let's see him!

It’s a shame CBS don’t think it’ll do well with it being set in TOS. It’s strange since I thought the majority wanted a post Nemesis show.
It’s similar with Disney and only focusing on the OT with Star Wars. They’re too scared to do anything new.

Not a fan of all these recasts. Just feels like cheating to me.

At least with Picard it’s the same actor. I imagine he’ll only be in a season andthe new cast will carry it on from there.

DS9 Season 1 isn't anywhere near as bad as people claim it is (it's the best first season of non-TOS Trek by far).

That said, a lot of the first season was just throwing things against the wall and seeing what stuck. They had the tone down, and they were working out the bugs in the characters, but they really hadn't figured out yet the stories they wanted to tell.

Yup. All first seasons are essentially proving grounds for shows, even more so for Trek as there's that shadow of previous shows falling on them. DS9's first season felt like a TNG spin-off, whereas the remaining seasons felt like they had found their groove and kept building on that.

It’s strange since I thought the majority wanted a post Nemesis show.

But is that really the case? I know some fans wanted more of the 24th century, but I'm not certain the majority of us were dead-set on that. Not to mention the general public and more casual fans.

"Before Kirk. Before Spock" may still have more cachet than "After Picard. After Data." :)

To be honest I’m a bit bored of Spock. We know what he was doing during this time.
I'm pretty sure this is all we know about Spock between "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before" other than what's been in the trailer:

  1. He was serving with Pike during at least some of it, per "The Menagerie" (TOS).
  2. He was on Earth, at least briefly, six years before "This Side Of Paradise" (TOS), during which time he met Leila Kalomi, who may or may not have expressed feelings of love for him, but who perceived no overt reciprocal expression of any such feelings from him in either case.
  3. He last visited his parents four years before "Journey To Babel" (TOS).
  4. Kirk had known him for several years by "Amok Time" (TOS), and up to that time had not known him to request any sort of leave, and had known him to have refused it on at least one occasion. (Note that Kirk says nothing that would preclude Shaving taken leave on any number of occasions before he'd known him, nor having accepted leave under orders, or even having gone AWOL, before or during that time.)
  5. According to Dehner, who herself was new and thus could only have been going either by what she'd been told and/or had read in ship's records, or even just assuming, he had "worked next to" Gary Mitchell for at least two years (or thereabouts) prior to "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (TOS).

That's it, as far as I can recall. I stand to be corrected and/or amended on anything I overlooked.

So is this whole Discovery thing a front to just do TOS again?
I'd say more like to set up TOS, but in such a way that even those of us already well familiar with it won't be able to predict the course that will be taken in arriving there, and upon revisiting will see it in a new and different light than ever before.

They really aren't. Most shows don't get two years "to get it right", they either sink or swim.

To clarify, I'm talking about shows that last longer than two years. There's plenty of shows out there with first seasons that have that air of "early installment weirdness" to them. Not all successful shows got their groove from the first episode on.

But I get what you mean.

He was his science officer I believe.
That is just a general fact, not specifics. What did he do while he was a science officer? Did he discovery new planets or Species?

We don't know everything he did between The Cage and TOS.

Not sure. Quinto is a great actor, and I don't think he came close to Nimoy's interpretation of the role. There have been plenty of Vulcans over the years, and only Mark Lenard created one that I felt was worthy of Nimoy.

I can't be 100 percent certain if that's the actor or the writing, but Spock must be more difficult to pull off than it looks.

Spock requires an almost perfect actor to pull it off. An actor who can proclaim Spock without raising his voice. An actor who can proclaim emotion while remaining perfectly calm. An actor who can express intense emotion by raising an eyebrow or making a scathing quip without showing anything more than the tiniest smile. And an actor who can raise the emotional level of a Vulcan to gargantuan heights when, on the rare occasions, that Vulcan Logic fails. I don't know if Peck can do any of those things, but I'm willing to give him the opportunity to try. He has to go into this with all his heart, or he will fail. I applaud him for trying.

He’s supposed to be more like Cage Spock who smiles and yells randomly so it may be easier to play.

This is 'The Cage' Spock who was more emotional and not quite as stoic yet.
