Should there be any DS9 "callbacks" in the new Picard show?

"Should there be ...."
Would I like to see some? Yes.
Would it be better to not do any at all than to do them badly? Yes.

If there is a reason why a DS9 character might be in a place, and the actor is available, go for it.
Heck, I think it might be nice to just have Picard visit DS9: nobody we know is still there and the place has changed a lot, but he's admiring the changes.
But if he's supposed to be on the far side of whatever then he is, and that makes cameos unlikely.

As someone commented above, it risks making the universe seem small. That was something that bothered me about the Vanguard novels: on the one hand it was cool to see them expand on a large number of minor characters from TOS and the movies, but on the other if you gathered all your major characters in a room and asked everyone who had met, or would meet (in canon), Jim Kirk to raise their hand, .... when all but one or two hands are raised that seems kinda silly.

As much as I am not a big fan of crossovers, regardless of what universe they are in, I'm sure that the appearance of any DS9 characters could easily be organic to the story. The series laid down a lot of pipe. All that major races/societies were put through the wringer, and it would be impossible to deal with them without dealing with developments that happened within the series. Bashir, Kira, and of course, Garak would be welcome in an episode that focused on Cardassians. Section 31? Why not Bashir or O'Brien? Are you going to talk about Klingon high politics without Martok?

I give up. Why?

Maybe they implied that there should be callbacks to other series?

I mean, I dunno. DIS has already had several notable callbacks to ENT (more than I would have expected) and TOS. There will obviously be TNG callbacks in the Picard show, and I'm sure they'll make at least one reference to Discovery and/or Micheal Burnham just to make sure it's established as part of prime timeline history.

That leaves what, VOY? I see very few reasons to reference it honestly. Unlike DS9, Picard knew none of the characters. Also unlike DS9, very little happened in VOY which affected the Federation in a major way, since it was a small-bore story about the ship's journey home. Due to how Endgame worked out, we don't know what their careers were after getting back to Earth, but it seems unlikely they would have become heavy hitters Picard was aware of. Though I wouldn't mind seeing Tuvok again. Still, Janeway got a cameo in Nemesis (Seven would have too, except Jeri Ryan refused) thus you could argue it's DS9's "turn."

Regardless, I never said there shoudn't be callbacks to other shows. I just posted the thread here because I'm a Niner, and it was relevant to the subforum.

Which design?

There's the series design and the novels design. Given that only a small percentage of the fans read the novels, and almost no one from the general viewing audience, it (imo) would pretty much have to be the DS9 from the series. Maybe with a few minor modifications, but not many.

Spyone, which did you have in mind?

Maybe a reference to events affecting larger parts of the federation or starfleet like the dominion war but I doubt there'll be more, it's a Picard show so they'll do TNG references and appearances first.

It would never happen, but imagine if Picard recalled his old friend Elias Vaughn. It would make an old geek happy.

Neither, or both.
I actually envisioned just a short scene with Picard on the prominade, which would actually be more expensive than showing the exterior since it would require rebuilding the set.

You'd think Star Trek would have realized that keeping sets around will come in useful some day when the universe includes time travel...

Somehow I don't think it actually would've been cost effective to store the DS9 sets for *2 decades* just so they could have a nostalgic moment in their Picard revival. Space costs money.

For a quick shot I'm sure they could get away with using a green screen. Not that I expect it to happen of course, but no physical sets certainly wouldn't preclude filming a scene like that.
