Star Trek 4 Hits A Snag

It's impossible to know how this will be resolved, obviously.

It's reasonably likely that Paramount will make some kind of deal with Pine but that Hemsworth will pass and the film will have to be reconceived and rewritten.

And yes, it's reasonable for both of them to want to be paid in line with what they make elsewhere (as well as what they may have been promised).

If Paramount's truly this cash-strapped, this stubborn and this short-sighted - and let's be honest, Beyond's lousy box office take was at least as much due to their last-minute no-confidence total-lack-of-marketing as anything else - I'm perfectly fine with that brief glimpse of the Kelvinprise-A being the last we see of that series. Star Trek has been wasted by, and wasted on, that studio.

Well, the only alternative on the horizon is a shit version of Kirk and Spock produced by the <ahem> brain trust responsible for that mediocrity on All Access.

Hard to really care now with Patrick Stewart back.
Hopefully that means we’re looking ahead, rather than back.
These JJVERSE films were fine but they didn’t really add anything substantial to the lore. Just another alternate universe that is bound to catch up and merge back to the Prime timeline.

i posted these in the other thread, but it's worth repeating here so our hair doesn't get too singed.

the main takeaway from the hollywood reporter is:

"It is unclear what the next step is for Trek 4. The project could recast Kirk and his father. Or perhaps the two sides could come back to the table.

Either way, Paramount and Skydance insiders say the movie, also produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot, remains a priority development and is not being put on hold."

and io9's take it probably correct:

"Often, stopping contract negotiations and leaking information to the press about it is just a negotiation tactic. It puts pressure on the studio as fans go apeshit that two key actors may not return to the film. That’s probably what’s happening here—but we’ll have to wait and see."

Yeah, the notion that hiring the septugenarian star of a property that ended fifteen years ago constitutes "looking ahead" in any way that matters is arrant nonsense.

It's nice that they're making a Picard show, but I don't really care.

these "JJverse" films only revived the franchise, made more money than any trek films before them, and launched the careers of several A-list actors. nbd.

they're the reason we got discovery and why we're getting a picard series. they also reach a wider audience than CBS all access. the successes of the new trek TV series and the successes of the kelvin timeline movies are intertwined.

This is typical bush league Paramount crap. Chris Pine's performance in Wonder Woman was so damn good they could have fast-tracked any Trek movie with him in it and gotten a hit simply by riding its coat-tails.

Hemsworth, while not having many hits outside the MCU has superstar name recognition. He'd be a major draw.

Before Beyond came out they said they wanted a MCU caliber film franchise.

Paramount, take a look at what the Fast and Furious franchise did. Instead of scrapping and rebooting, they built on existing characters and lore. They made previously awful movies relevant and fun to rewatch just because even casual viewers wanted to recall how this or that character joined the gang.

If you're going to make a story about fathers and sons, maybe get Alice Eve back so that Kirk can have actual character development and David Kirk can be born. Maybe get Sofia Boutella's Jaylah to take the helmsman position since Chekov sadly cannot appear. Use the previous movies to your advantage. Don't just say "that wasn't a huge success, let's ignore its existence."

There's a reason Infinity War had 97 characters. It's because they spent 20 movies making 97 characters interesting.

Maybe try to pay Captain Kirk what he deserves and build a franchise from your three previous films.

I'm not bothered about Hemsworth. I have no interest in seeing his character and he's a terrible actor. Pine, on the other hand, is integral to these movies. Give him what he wants!

Contract negotiations (or even renegotiations) are nothing even remotely new, except that now we hear more about them almost instantly whereas previously, we'd only hear about them later after the movie has been made.

I hope to god they scrap this utterly cliche kirk meets his daddy gag entirely. SPACE EXPLORATION is what I want. Weird nebulas, treacherous away missions, strange anomalies “unlike anything we have encountered before”. If I wanted a father son space drama I’d watch Star Wars. They’re only pushing this hemsworth plot because they think he will bring more marvel fans, imo

Lol, I’d like to see them try to recast Kirk!
Lol, if they can’t resign Chris Pine, ST4 will be cancelled.

Uh, Into Darkness made the most money AND was the most derivative (Kahn again). Beyond made the least and way the least derivative (and a better movie).

Maybe it's time they do some legwork and go out and actually ask people what they want in a Star Trek movie instead of doing what they want and then expecting everyone to gobble it right up.

If Pine made a deal with them they should stop playing cheap and respect it.
Pine is more important than the other Chris. I never liked the 'bring his dad back' idea anyway.

This could be a disaster either way because they either lose these actors, or they give them both what they want but lose others from the cast who probably are already given less. It would be really bad to lose Uhura, Mccoy or others just because 1-2 guys want more money and the studio sacrifices other actors and characters. I don't trust the studio and I just bet that if those two get payed more, they'll do cheap with the others.
This wouldn't be the first time something like that happens.

Not all the actors accept a cut to their paycheck to help their costars when studios are being cheap.
