That doesn't mean the show won't have the same fate as Discovery. There are still lots of scripts to write and decisions to be made between now and when the show debuts.

I'm struggling to think of any revivals that haven't been successful in recent years. Full House, Will And Grace, Roseanne, Dallas (despite being an insult to the original), even The X Files initially before the crap writing put a bullet in it. Nostalgia is huge right now.

Of course the writing is the key here. Fuck this show up with the same crap writing Discovery churned out and it will fail no matter who stars in it.

There's one thing I'm not clear on: is this an ongoing show (multiple seasons) or a one-shot deal?

If CBS considered Disco a failure or were disappointed in its performance to any degree, the last thing they would do is green-light another Trek series. The very existence of this Picard show is proof that CBS is satisfied with Disco.
I don't think anything's been said one way or the other. IMO, it'll likely be done in a manner that could serve as a one-shot, with the door open for potential continuation.

Yep. You don't give the people involved with Discovery more shows if you aren't happy with the performance of it. The Picard show is there to expand the number of months people subscribe to All-Access.

While I like the Idea of continuing with Picard, I'm getting a bit tired of "Nostalgia" series ( I mean. .there remaking ALF.. Come On!) I'd rather a whole new crew set after Nemisis, with the originals doing the ocasional cameos.
If its set 20 years latter, Set a new crew on the Enterprise E, give it a "refit" and have an admiral picard etc. Continue and tell new stories.. Stop rehashing, rebaking, etc. Tv..

Unfortunately, this is where the money is at right now where TV is concerned.

Yeah, that's the REAL baffling part: They gave Kurtzman that multi-series deal before anyone was happy with DIS!
DIS is not the same thing as Game of Thrones when it started out: Nobody heard of GoT, the success of GoT's first season stand on it's own feet.
DIS is part of a bigger franchise, one of the biggest, oldest genre IP's around. Of course people will check out the first new outing! Like with Star Wars, or Zack Snyders DC' outings, the first new entry is guaranteed to get asses in seats. It's what comes afterwards that's truly indicative of how successfull it is: Are people happy with it? Do they stay, or loose viewership? Because if they aren't they risk a Beyond/Solo/Justice League-surprise where people just tune out.
I guess Trek is a bit more robust, in that there is SO many content available we are already used to schlock, and Trek is more of a "playground" than just one single ongoing story (like Star Wars) or character (like Superman or Batman) that can be "ruined" by shit writing (though the run the risk by introducing "youngSpock") - Trek can always move on to the next character or the next ship, and past mistakes will be forgotten. But still - considering how much they are re-vamping DIS already it's safe to assume it didn't exactly met expectations. If they let those same guys do the very same thing again, without them having it made work really good once, they gonna' run into troubles fast.

Obviously, there are enough people happy with Discovery that warranted the action CBS took. I guarantee they have people who sit there all day long gauging reactions about their products from various sources.

Like it or not, the Discovery template is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

I think the Picard series has the potential to be disasterous, quite frankly. It will take place 20 years after Nemesis, and we are likely to see a very different character as a result.

If recent fandom reactions to things that are different are any indication, we could have a lot of TNG fans whose childhoods are about to be mutilated beyond all repair.

I personally look forward to it, because I generally (almost predictably) like things vocal minorities lose their minds over...but still...

Agreed. The whole thing is down to the writing and storytelling. We've seen Picard at his best and also represented in some shocking writing especially in seasons 1-3 of TNG and most of the movies. We need more of Cardassian prisoner Picard and less Insurrection Picard.

The thing is, Picard was compelling to watch even when the writing was shit, because Patrick Stewart can spin straw into gold when i comes to scripts. Therefore, I'm pretty certain that the show will at least be acceptable.

I want the Picard who knew how to balance rules and common sense, like in "Pen Pals".

Well, Patrick Stewart will be acceptable. I love him as Avery Bullock in American Dad. Not so sure about the show itself.

I think the new show is going to be Picard presenting a game show on federation TV.

    Talk about dull.

It (much like anything else) will come down to the writing.
