Disclaimer: this is not intended to dump on DSC.

Having seen the video of Sir Patrick announcing the return of Captain Picard, and the resulting extended cheer and overwhelming outpouring of positivity, I wonder whether a new show focusing on Picard could eclipse Discovery altogether.

There seems to be more positive feeling about a show in the TNG era as opposed to the pre-TOS era, and there is much love for Picard - more than for, say, Michael Burnham.

Much as I’m discoscpetic, I would hope that a new Picard show wouldn’t spell the end for DSC. The more Trek on tv the better I say.

The TOS era seems contentious - maybe DSC should spore jump ahead to the TNG era?

I expect this Picard show to be smaller in terms of production resources and budget, but will be welcome by TNG fans, providing they don't re-imagine too much, and trample on the memory and good will

It absolutely will, but that has nothing to do with the era era the shows are set and everything to do with a beloved actor and character returning.

STAR TREK is back and better than before. And now that it is back, there's going to be plenty of room for everybody.

There is much love for Picard 20 years after the event plus when TNG came on the scene it was the only Trek in town after many decades. At the time not even the cast, including the then plain old Mr Patrick Stewart bothered to unpack his suitcase, would TNG have been as popular if it came along in our social media age? I doubt it.
Whether a Picard show will eclipse Discovery, it has an advantage due to the nostalgia factor but that is not enough to carry a show.

They'll likely play at different times of the year. So, ideally, they should compliment each other and keep people paying for All-Access for more than four months.

    I don't.

See I’m a big TNG fan - I grew up on it - and I’m cautious about this Picard show, such is my love for the character. The thing that gives me hope is the fact that PStew seems to care about Picard and I doubt he’d let anyone ruin him :)

I think you’re right - but it makes me wonder what the reaction to DSC would have been had it been post-NEM all along

Pre-TOS or post-Nemesis, the problems with the writing would still exist. Which is my biggest axe to grind with Discovery.

    Amen to this :)

There’s a thought - I didn’t think of it from a commercial pov. Even at different times of year, though, I wonder whether DSC will be enough to hold peoples interest until the new series of “Star Trek: JLP” comes back on...

Mm wonders if the writers will ignore the Control issues in the novelverse...
New series set in a Federation penal colony with the former Captain Picard as a guest lol

Fair point - I feel the same way to a large extent with DSC.

Hopefully PStew will have enough clout to take a stand against bad writing :shifty:

I could honestly see this getting more attention than DISCO especially in the mainstream entertainment media. Picard/TNG have the advantage of a lot of goodwill, name recognition, and time on their side. DISCO never has felt like it got the attention that CBS I'm sure hoped it would.

    Oh no...

I hope not now. I thought spiner was - I really don’t wanna watch it again to find out

Yeah, pretty much. Though had the it been a quantum slipstream in post-Nemesis setting instead of sporedrive in pre-TOS setting it would have been slightly less painful. (Though I hated slipstream too.)

I expect the writers to ignore the novels almost completely.

You're right. He was an associate producer on Insurrection. Which in my book, is worse than Nemesis. Between him and Spiner, they took a serviceable story from Michael Piller and turned it into a dumpster fire.

Oh, yeah it is. Pretty white people being forced to move, Picard and the mamba, Data as a flotation device, and on and on...

I've had it on Blu-ray for near a decade now, and have never revisited it. Likely never will. Nemesis at least tried to feel like a movie, with stakes that mattered.

I'm a HUGE TNG fan, but that doesn't mean I'll like what they have Picard doing in a future TNG spin off. Every show is different, but if it's headed up by the same group that runs Discovery, that's points against it not for it. But, who knows until we see it.
