Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

Yeah but he’s apt to do anything now and when somebody says “get me a Anthony Hopkins type.” and Anthony Hopkins is in the position of doing anything and everything, you wind up with Anthony Hopkins.

Oh hell, if we're talking fantasy, lets bring Sean Connery out of retirement.

No. One, he wouldn't do it (Remember Lord of the Rings and The Matrix?). I hesitate to say that he would be poor in the role (I mean, Master of Assassins describes Bond) but I struggle with him as a "thinking computer."

The litmus test for any Thufir Hawat is how they react to having their prized cat brutalised by Baron Harkonnen, Thufir would seek the advantage. A Mentat is easily 15 to 20 moves ahead of you if they're worth their water. If anyone can get a chrysknife near Harkonnen's throat, it's Thufir. Why he faltered, it escapes me.

I doubt many actors playing geniuses would strike anyone as thinking computers if you were to meet them in real life ; )

I still remember Jennifer Morrison in a commercial for House on Global talking about how it's harder to be a pretend doctor than a real one because you can't actually put a tube down someones throat in a TV show.

How about Scott Glenn for Gurney?

or

Willem Dafoe?

Little old, no? Gurney doesn't need to be young but Dafoe is in his 60's and Glen is, what, 75? 80?

That’s why I like Dean Norris. He’s 55, can be perfectly described as a lump of a man. Throw a scar on him, boom instant Gurney.

It's not overly explicit in the book but Hawat was working against the baron from inside.

If I recall correctly, Thurfir saw the danger in having The Beast Roban step in to the leadership role of the Great House. He had considered helping Feyd assassinate both of them to ensure Feyd's leadership.

I might need to reread the book now.

Though he also played Feyd and The Baron off against each other too - Feyd's fight in the arena and the Baron with the slave boy in his quarters where both Thufir's manipulations.

Thufir had every reason to believe Paul was dead and with him, any hope of saving house Atredies. In that moment, based on what he knew his only option for survival was to serve the Harkonnen and his best opportunity for revenge was to use that access to set them against each other. Any idiot could see the Baron was setting Feyd up to replace Rabban to win over the people of Arrakis, Thufir just nudged him into trying to jump the queue and go for the Baron directly.
Presumably, after that the idea was to take down Feyd somehow and effectively eliminate that house from the universe. Whether it be a direct assassination, or manoeuvre him into an impossible position that either ends with the other houses, or even the Emperor destroying House Harkonnen, or leaving him with no option but to grab the family atomics and flee into exile.

Although, didn't he do League of Extraordinary Gentlemen because he was afraid he'd be turning down another hit like those two? And then, of course, League turned out to be anything but a hit.

Guess we now know why we didn't get a lump of a man planning Halleck :)
