Meh, what made Isaacs interesting had diddly-squat to do with his perceived Alpha Male-itudity.

It was just so refreshing to have a character driving the story week after week on Star Trek that most could agree was a self-interested, borderline sociopathic dick.

But, alas, they couldn't commit. He had to be explained as being from the Universe of Dicks.*

*Which is weird when you think of it, because it's a matter of established Star Trek canon that most Starfleet admirals are dicks. And where do you suppose they come from? They must all have been captains somewhere, at some point.

Starfleet automatically promotes all the dicks straight past captain to admiral so they can play with reports all day and can't really do any real harm.

I think he’s mistaking the pointing out of irony (the more purposefully OTT ‘manly’ the work, the less likely it will appeal to only a straight male audience. So trying to use certain presentations and behaviours as an arbitrary line to determines ‘true masculinity’ or whatever is admittedly hilarious), for an attempt to mock the actors involved.

Or he just assumed that because I pointed out the homoerotc shit in stuff he likes (and the fact those tight pants were not intended for the appreciation of straight men), then i must also be implying he’s gay.

Note: Whilst we like porn, one cannot live off it for years on end. Especially when the show is aiming to be a serious drama. Hence, the call for diversity, and no it’s not an excuse to feed us an endless line of Shatners.

Oh dear, I just loved her romance with Ash, I feel she and he were drawn together because both could sense each other was damaged like they are. I mean I felt a lot of heat and passion from both of them, especially Michael who's so very reserved, do we know if she's ever really even been in love before? I felt her vulnerabilities were really coming out with Ash, and his reveal to her about how he isn't really himself in the mirror universe was just amazing to me and so very heartbreaking, and I felt you can really see just how deep her pain is through her acting.

Often in real life, people are drawn together by their trauma and neediness, and sometimes it even works out and leads to a lifetime commitment. There seemed to be a lot of emotional intensity shown throughout. Not sure why so many people here didn't like it, other than perhaps it is an aspect of romance we don't often see on screen and makes the characters appear weak. As to your question about whether it's her first love, that was a plot point in the Mudd episode. The secret she tells Stamets is that she's never been in love.

I have no problem with the idea of Burnham and Tyler, but I never found Shazad Latif to be at all interesting in performance or Tyler to be an even remotely interesting character in execution. There was potential there, but in the end Burnham/Green was carrying the whole thing by herself so it never really got off the ground. Her relationships with Tilly, Stamets, Saru, Sarek, Lorca, and Georgiou were miles better in pretty much every way, even though Lorca and Georgiou were undermined by ill-advised evilness in the MU plot.

If you want a sense of how they're really laying out the relationship between Burnham and Pike, you just have to look at the scene in the trailer where Michael has to hold his hand and talk him through the fighter chase or whatever it is (when Pike panics because he's out of control)....

I agree he was really pushing for 'emotional intensity'. But for me, the overall effect he usually achieved in his scenes (though some were better than others) was more 'daytime soap opera'. Obviously none of this was helped by the fact that his story literally went nowhere. He's introduced as a damaged officer, but rather than show him battling his damage, he's unmasked as a Klingon spy. Then, rather than do anything with his new status he just winds up catatonic and has his Klingon personality erased essentially restoring him straight back to the damaged starfleet officer we got to begin with. A long meandering road that literally just took him in a big circle with no real payoff.

I don't really disagree with anything you say here. I don't watch the "daytime or nighttime soap operas" because I find them too ridiculous and poorly acted - and this prejudice of mine is probably also ridiculous coming from a lifelong lover of most science fiction. So obviously I was able to get something more interesting out of his (and her) performances than run of the mill "soap". I guess there's a fine line between drama and "soap" or drama and melodrama. We decide for ourselves when actors cross over the line, but I actually found his "snotty nose swipe" scene upon being dumped all too believable and heartbreaking. A few of us have actually been there. I too believe that the writers pretty much ruined his story arc, her story arc, and everyone else's story arc. But I still liked the individual performances of SMG, Latif, and all the characters, although it took me a few weeks initially to buy in. So I plan to be back for season 2, am glad to see the new characters coming on, am glad that Tyler and L'Rell will also be coming back, and hope that the writers will be able to right the ship and create start to finish plotlines that are more to my liking this time around.

Back on topic, really looking forward to Captain Pike. It seems they put a lot of effort into casting Spock. If Spock is joining the Discovery crew as well, Pike may be Captain for the long haul. Spock and Pike served together for 11 yrs.

If they change what we know about Pike and Spock then we'll be sure it's a different timeline or reality!
