Ranking insignia

At one point in the series the ranking insignia of the crew are named. I want to say "epaulet," but I don't really remember. Anyone here who can help?

I don't remember where I heard it, but I think they're just called pips. Epaulettes are ornamental shoulder pieces that sometimes denote rank, like on Napoleonic uniforms

They were described as "pips" in dialog in DS9 and VOY a few times. I'm not sure if the word was ever spoken out loud in TNG.
