Something I Never Saw before in Star Trek II

Right after Kahn said, "explain it to them" and the torpedo is fired, we see McCoy, Carol, and David hanging out. It's only for a second--literally--and I always wondered where they were. Today I finally paused to look around, and there on the glass wall it says, "CDR. L. MC COY, M.D." I never saw that before! They were chilling out in Dr. McCoy's office...which I don't think we see before or again. (Possibly TMP but can't remember off the top of my head.) I must have seen this movie 100+ times and again keep finding things I never saw before. Coolness.

I believe this shot was felt necessary, actually, so that it made sense to the uninitiated why David knows stuff like what Kirk told Saavik, when David wasn't even on the scene, yet. There needed to be some indication that he wasn't just wandering the halls with his mother looking at everything with mouths agape. So, they were shown interacting with the only one on the ship who was available to chat with them who had a shared history with the mother, at least. And then, of course, it serves the double purpose of showing the Enterprise getting buzzed by the torpedo. A lot of information conveyed very economically in a moment's moment of film. Nick Meyer's a pretty smart guy ...

Amen to that.

We also see that Reliant fires that torpedo at 1235 hours, according to McCoy's analog clock in his office. And apparently he's an afternoon coffee drinker. Although, I suppose that could have been Diet Coke. :)

I suspect it was probably an Irish Coffee that Bones was enjoying -- especially, as he's been known to take a snootful of Romulan Ale, Saurian Brandy, and Mint Julep when the mood strikes him.

The Reliant fires the torpedo at 1235 hours, you say? I don't recall seeing a clock! I shall investigate this ...

I always figured they were in sickbay, since that's supposed to be one of the most protected places in a ship. Maybe this was stated in the novelization or script?

You inspired me to look around, and I found this from that scene in an earlier draft of the script. Evidently they changed it to just being in McCoy's office:

The ship reverberates with the near miss. Chekov wakes

Here is a publicity shot with McCoy in his office chair, with that clock behind him.

The I-III movie sets were originally made for the unmade Phase II TV series, and so lots was built that never got used or was barely glimpsed - like McCoy's office. There were also dining booths in the crew quarters which never got seen.

The dining booth was added for TWOK. I've seen the plans for it.

You can see the office in TMP behind Kirk as he and Spock and Decker discuss the Ilia probe.

The first thing McCoy does when the ship shakes is reach out and steady his drink. The man has priorities! :techman:

Instead of the TMP's Recreation Room set or Officer's Lounge set, I wish they had built a 1701-Refit Briefing Room set for TMP, WOK or the 1701-A Briefing Room set for TFF or TUC. It was such an important part of TOS.

It's a shame that we never got to see more of these wonderful sets. I'm pretty sure this shot of the CMO Office was less than one full second of screen time.

Even the intricate and appealing Warp Engineering Room set was really only seen in 2 films.

Yep. The Prop Store had them up for auction last year:

I was tempted, but I was already bidding on other items in the auction and it was getting expensive as it went on (I ended up with 7 of the 10 pieces I was bidding on).

Here is the location on the TMP Kirk's quarters set blueprints:

Our own @Donny did a wonderful build of those TMP/TWOK sickbay sets a while back. There's a thread over in the TrekArt Forum.

I also like it because that shot shows that the Enterprise was McCoy's regular/semiregular assignment, since his name is etched on the door. McCoy serving on a trainee Enterprise with Spock as the Captain while Kirk is stuck in a desk job back on Earth? I want to see that Star Trek series! :)

I have loved your work Donny. I have subscribed to your flickr account and I am always excited and appreciative of the level fo skill and attention to detail you put into your models and renders.
