Season 2 Teaser

I just noticed something about the trailer:

Most of the time, Pike is wearing a TOS-style uniform, except for one bit (it's when he says "Ruffle a few feathers") where he has a DSC uniform.

Is there any special significance to this?

Awkward elevator conversations, I get. But I'm pretty sure I don't remember ever having been sneezed on in an enclosed space, so maybe I can't relate. Regardless, it's juvenile gross-out humor, and and I just don't find it funny, and never have. Obviously YMMV, but that kind of thing is actually what I like least about The Orville.

It also makes Starfleet look painfully stupid. A uniformed crew member can’t figure out not to sneeze on people? This isn’t some first-contact cultural conflict.

I hate that sort of humor. Like having Scotty knock himself out on that beam.

Probably just that most of the stuff they've filmed is earlier in the episode.

My guess is Pike doesn't put on the Disco uni until the end of the premier when he decides he going to be there for a while.

I assume he changes when he takes command of Discovery.

Yeah, that's probably it.

Also I noticed that even the TOS uniforms in the trailer have DSC-style piping on them. I thought that was a nice touch.

If you have to sneeze...you have to sneeze. Right then. You don't always have the luxury of planning where you're going to direct that sneeze.

You can’t cover your nose or sneeze into your elbow? Or make some attempt to do so? Or apologize afterward? Hopefully there is more to that scene, because what’s in the trailer is indefensible.

Having been sick for the last two weeks I will freely attest to not always being prepared for the sneezes that come with illness. I applaud your self-awareness but it doesn't always happen.

Do you apologize afterward? Or is that another case of “doesn’t always happen”?

That’s my point — anyone on a starship would know that. Respecting other cultures goes in both directions.
There are still going to be cultural variations. Not everyone is going to remember perfect form every single time. Again, it's allowing characters to make mistakes rather than assuming perfection.

Is this pre or post cage? I wonder if this season will explain Pikes mysogony.
Post.

We’ll have to disagree on this. I just think it’s a cheap joke shoved in for a cheap joke, to show that the show has discovered a sense of humor.

Maybe it won’t even show up in the show itself.

I think the overall scene is good with Michael and shows her humanity and her compassion. Could have cut it right before the sneeze and the impact would have been the same.

I just try to ignore that bit :D

I understand what Roddenberry was going for: women in major military positions and possible command would be a new thing for 60's audiences. But he immediately undermines by having another woman on the bridge just a moment later. And in TOS, where most women were there just to be leered at.
