Season 2 Teaser

I'm sure someone else (or many someones) has already mentioned something similar in the thread, but I finally just saw the trailer and I have a theory.

I think they may be setting up a merge of the Kelvinverse and the Primeverse.

Those sure looked a hell of a lot like Red Matter detonations in that region of space where they were going to investigate the galaxy-threatening emergency situation. And it's somehow tied to YoungPrimeSpock in a way and caused his leave of absence. What if the death of OldPrimeSpock in the Kelvinverse somehow caused a psychic connection to form through the Mycelial Network underlying the universe and connecting all points in time and space, including alternate universes, and that summoned YoungPrimeSpock to the source of the Red Matter events, much like V'Ger would later call to him from across the galaxy?

Much like how Abrams said the ripples from the event that formed the Kelvinverse traveled both forwards and backwards through time, it could be used as a justification for the aesthetic and historical changes in DSC and bring the two disparate timelines into alignment, simplifying things and allowing people from both universes to appear without having to create any more elaborate Treknobbable justifications to do so after this initial event.

I think it's basically setting up the Trek version of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Of course, I'm just talking out of my ass here and may be reading too much into it, but with all the Kelvinverse nods (the Kelvinverse warp effect, Pike saying "punch it!", the Red Matter supernova-like explosions, and the connection that draws in PrimeSpock) that was the first vibe I was getting from the trailer.

Since I saw the Discoprise, I’ve always wondered if this or something similar was how they were going to connect Discovery to TOS era Trek and reconcile things like the visual differences, advanced tech, etc...

It would fit what Kurtzman has said about the show being in the prime universe. It is but somewhere prior to the start of Discovery everything was changed and nobody knew. Maybe Pike was perceptive enough that he figured it out and that led him to what we see in the trailer.

I liked it a great deal. Loved all the humor. THAT is what the show has been needing I just hope it's not false gold. Granted it might also be what we will see once the first 5 episodes are over and the hand of the old showrunners are gone. More of a promise to fans that the fun is coming. I wouldn't be shocked also if they edited the early episodes to include more humor.
I do worry that Burnham is still giving no fun moments. She is left once again doing the boring speeches. I hope they move away from that. We got Picard coming back to do that kind of stuff and frankly he does it better. We need to start a writing campaign to CBS and let her out of the no-fun jail. I do think her arc though is going to be more interesting in regards to wanting to help Spock and the red beams are whatever those things are. Much better than the war they was never fully developed or a traitor arc that I could never buy into because everyone in Starfleet breaks the laws at some point and goes rogue.
Linus and Nagato and Pike look like they will be great additions. Pike overwhelming Burnham is a possibility like with Lorca so it will be interesting to see if history repeats itself. Also Linus makes me think of the slime alien voiced by Norm McDonald on "Orville" but I guess we will only know that if he has the hots for Stamets. Also I agree that the special effects look much better. Some say it reminds them of the Kelvin Universe but how can that be. I didn't see any lense flares?:)

How do you figure? It's fall 2257 for the DSC crew. The standard understanding of canon is that Pike commanded the Enterprise from 2251 to 2264. IOW, he's basically smack in the middle, with more years ahead of him yet than the total time that Kirk had the ship.

(Which is not to say I disagree that the April era would've made more sense for a prequel. But that ship has sailed...)

Ship has definitely sadly sailed on April, yes.

Starting a Pike series after these characters have served together already for about 7 years takes some of the potential away for character dynamics, development and conflict. It's also, again, getting a bit too close to the Kirk era for comfort.

Pike (in the prime timeline) is typically said to have been born in 2219, so he's about 38 at this point.

What the hell...lol. so that means Pike was 35 or younger when he met Kirk at the bar in the Kelvin-verse academy days?

Yikes.

I think his age has been retconned. We have to at least assume he was near 40s (Hunters age) during the events of the Cage 2254.

So why does Pike need the Discovery? Why not use the Enterprise to investigate? Or does he need the spore drive for this mission?

I would like to think the design of the Discovery makes it specifically better for the mission.

But I guess it could be something more like Pike has a loyalty to Spock, and Starfleet forbade the Enterprise to go off mission. So he transfers to Discovery and the Enterprise heads off until they meet back up and return Spock and Pike resumes command.

Because all the main characters are on "Discovery." :) Actually I think it could be something more along the lines that Discovery is a science ship and might be more equipped for this mission. It could be that Pike knows Burnham is Spocks sister and might have insight on what he is doing and where he has gone. The other thing is the Enterprise might be exploring another avenue of this mystery and Starfleet want two Officers in command who had more command experience with both ships and that would be Pike and Number One. Also the other is it might be a secret plot of Section 31. Any black badges spotted in the teaser!

I mean, I don't blame you for thinking of it! It's a totally valid theory, given Discovery so far!

You're probably going to be right and can give yourself a hearty pat on the back for it while we all cry into our beers. My ire is reserved entirely for the Disco writers' room.
No worries. No offense taken. I knew it was totally fanwanky when I posted it. ;)

I liked the new teaser. It seems like it is what I wanted the first season to be. I want some fun adventure and action.

The biggest issue I have is similar to one of the issues I had going into the first season. It's the Michael being connected to Spock and Sarek. To me it was cynical fan service in that it wasn't done to make the character more interesting, but to throw a bone to older fans. So the potential 'big bad' or whatever it is being tied to Spock stuff I'm not excited about. I might have to trudge my way through it, like I did with the Klingon war stuff in season 1 (which I haven't finished because it is the focus of the final 2 episodes). I'd might put Pike being there in the same basket depending on how big a role he actually plays and hope that maybe he does a Mudd.

Anyway, the teaser did its thing. I have positive expectations for the next season.

Ugh, you've just reminded me that we know s31 are part of this season. That's put a downer on my enjoyment of the trailer's fun exploration vibe.

The Section 31/Mirror Georgiou and L'Rell stuff deserve to be scrapped off the series. They would literally drag down any attempts to go for a fun, optimistic tone that the trailer tried to sell.

I hate Sonequa's reasoning for why Star Trek should be "Dark and Gritty"... "because the real world is Dark and Gritty"

If the real world is supposedly so dark, Star Trek should be more optimistic, fun and positive than ever before.

IMHO, it's still too "try-hard".

Feels like a bunch of checklists aimed at pandering to a particular demographic.

Pew Pew (check)
Modern music those millenials are so hip to (check)
Add humor ala Kelvin-verse (check)
Lean on existing canon characters for fanservice (check)

mos6507: "Did you guys hear that dope new sound from Lenny Kravitz fresh outta 1998? It's totally radical. I hope they get him to do the soundtrack for the upcoming Star Wars Prequels, which are going to be the best thing ever and won't disappoint anyone."

Time Traveling Millennials: "Lenny Kravitz? You mean Zoe Kravitz's dad? The guy from The Hunger Games? He makes music?"

mos6507: "Whatever, posers. I'm off to go yell at those damn hippie Beatle lovers to go get a haircut and a job."

So, just to be clear, you're irked that a space navy show has lasers, so you don't like the action. But you're also irked that it had humor, so you don't like when there's a focus on something other than the action (noticing you glossed over the heavy exploration theme). Then you don't like that it tries to be too modern by playing music (never mind that it's twenty year old music and that most trailers nowadays* do that), but you also don't like that it references the past.

And they say fans are difficult to please.

* Nowadays meaning since the mid-90s.

Pike went through a Cochrane Field Bubble. It ages you, man.

They should actually embrace modern songs like "Westworld" and "Legion" actually does. What is wrong with modern music. As long as modern I mean anything before the musical end times that was the late 90's and early 2000's.
